Does you wedding dress have to match your venue?

Stephanie, on December 19, 2017 at 1:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 35

Perhaps this is a crazy question, and coming from someone who wouldn't normally care, why am I worried that my dress doesn't go with my venue/theme?

I already have the odd "buyer's remorse" feeling after purchasing my dress but another feeling I'm struggling with that I didn't expect is whether or not the dress and the venue make sense. Now I know this is a "making a mountain out of a mole hill" subject and I'm really not that worried about it, I'm just finally finding a place where I can voice these thoughts, feelings and opinions to others that may understand where I am coming from. Just looking for anyone who has had a similar thought and/or feeling.

Here is a link to my venue along with a few photos of my dress accompanied by wearing my mother's veil:

It doesn't have to, just get a dress that makes you feel most beautiful.

That being said, your dress looks amazing and I'm sure it will look stunning at your rustic venue. It doesn't clash with the venue anyway in my opinion, but you shouldn't feel regret for such a great dress. Congratulations!

First, your venue is gorgeous and no your dress does not have to match. Your dress nor your venue, make your wedding day. You marrying the love of your life does. Not one of your guest will say "her dress does not match this venue." There is no rule.

You know what's crazy? I am and have been a firm believer in making our wedding what WE want it to be. Traditional in some standards and not in many others. For example, my FH has his sister as his "Best Lady" but he also has a Best Man. He also has a "Groomswoman" amongst the groomsmen. One of my BMs is not a dress-wearer, she will be wearing the same tux that the other men wear. I'm sure some will have a comment about these differences, and that's cool! It doesn't bother me because I know it's what makes us happy. You're so right, it is about us, and I'm thankful that neither of us have lost sight of that...So why is it that thoughts like these creep in? It baffles me.

I honestly think your dress would match the venue you chose. It's a really nice venue, btw! I don't like western/outdoorsy things but I would love to go there!

I would choose a dress that you feel the most confident in. One reason I didn't go with a ball gown was because of the venue we have. The ceremony room has a narrow aisle to the alter, lol, I wouldn't be able to walk with my dad with the size of that gown.

I would love to be a guest at a wedding like yours. I love when couples step outside of the "norm" and do things different. Your wedding will definitely be unique! Imagine your pictures! And thats all that matters, its your wedding day and you have to do what makes you and your FH happy, yes you are hosting your guest however I'm sure they will be leased with the uniqueness of your wedding. I think the thoughts you are having are completely normal.

Beautiful dress and it will go well with the venue.

When I went dress shopping I focused more on my comfort level in the dress and the weather. We are hoping to have the ceremony on a rooftop in Florida (back up plan inside the hotel) in May. As such, I was concerned I would be entirely too hot in a ball gown and not comfortable moving around due to sweating. Another odd thing I was concerned about (don't laugh too hard) was how I was going to go to the bathroom with minimal help. Needing an escort every time did not seem appealing to me.

All that to say I think when we all go dress shopping we can focus on the craziest things.

As the bride you are to stand out however you can probably dress down with the shoes and remove the veil for the reception if you feel uneasy about your choice but I see nothing wrong with it! it's a beautiful dress and beautiful location. ..have the time of your life!

Oh yeah, I plan on wearing flats regardless and definitely removing the veil for the reception. It is cathedral length and it is my mother's veil, so there's no way I'm wearing it all day, lol. Thank you for your input!

Yes, we absolutely can! And I understand your feelings! I really considered a dress with actual sleeves, loved the look. But the second I got one on, I was sweating bullets! Now mind you, I live in Ohio and we're getting married in October, so it won't be blazing hot and I couldn't move fast enough to get it off me. And it was super itchy!

I thought about the bathroom thing, too! I may just have to purchase one of those "Bridal Buddies!" HA! Smiley xd My biggest test I would do, too, was the walking test, how did it feel to truly walk and move in it. And then the biggest one: the sit test! If it didn't feel comfortable sitting in and didn't pass that test, I wasn't about it! You are so right though, it's amazing the random thoughts that tend to seep into our minds during this.

If you look at the pictures on their website, the brides are wearing all different types of dresses from simple sheaths to ball gowns. Your dress looks beautiful on you and that's all that matters.

You are stunning in this dress. Oh, and that venue!! I don't at all believe the dress has to match the venue. If it gives you the feels, then that's it. You glow in this dress!! That said, I'm with PP- this dress will absolutely match the venue.

Your dress will go with your venue. I personally do feel as though people should consider the dress and the venue but in more specific situations. Such as a beach wedding vs a church you may not wear the same dress to both. I think it has more to do with formality than the specific venue.

    1. You're fabulous for allowing your friends to be themselves on your wedding day rather than conforming to wedding tradition norms. No sarcasm at all. Just remember that you can - and should! - be yourself that day as well.
    2. Your dress is gorgeous and you look so happy in that 2nd picture. THAT is what will matter on your wedding day, not whether you're wearing the "right" dress for your venue.
    3. There are some styles that tend to match certain venues, but that's not to say that's the rule at all. It's more important for you and FS to pick what will make you happy in this regard, and I don't think your dress will be out of place from what I see online.
