Does anyone save the top tier of their cake anymore?

I'm curious if anyone is planning on saving or has saved the top tier of their wedding cake for their first anniversary? I know this used to be something people did but not sure if it's necessary or if it's even good a year after.

We weren't planning to do this, but we did! we had a small cutting cake and then cupcakes, and after we did the ceremonial cut my mom whisked it away to make sure it got wrapped up. we ended up thawing it out 6 months after the wedding when we were having dinner with one of H's GMs and his fiancee, who are good friends of ours--he'd been super sick the day of our wedding and had to go home right after dinner, so we did a little do-over with them. it was lovely. it's a nice way to prolong the celebrations!

We saved ours, but my husband and his brother wrapped it up and did whatever they did to it and they were both feeling pretty nice at the time so I will be shocked if that thing is anything close to edible in August LOLSmiley cake

I own a bakery and though this will ensure it will freeze well, it will never taste the same 365 days later after sitting in a freezer no matter how you wrap it, for various reasons. I would suggest speaking to your baker & getting a 4" or 6" replica made on your anniversary.

We asked my baker and she said no, don't save it. Instead, call a few weeks before our first anniversary and she'll bake us a fresh cake!

Do not ever put a cake in the refrigerator to thaw. Refrigeration dries out cakes, so unless it's a whipped cream cake or something that could spoil this is bad advice. You can freeze cakes but never refrigerate them, unless they are made from a boxed mix with lots of preservatives in them.

We're not. Our bakery is going to recreate our top tier in whatever flavor we want free of charge for our first anniversary. If there's any cake leftover after the wedding we'll probably eat some and/or give to our parents.

My bakery told me that the top layer actually ends up being pretty gross in a year even if frozen, so they give couples a complimentary anniversary cake on the 1 year anniversary. Maybe ask your baker if they will do that for you?

Maybe there is a difference in temperature or humidity based on location, but I have never had an issue with cakes drying out. I always defrost them on the counter top if I plan to use them that day, otherwise, after frosting or if I am eating cake and am not going to eat all of it, I put it in the refrigerator.

I've never heard of this tradition! I don't think we plan to, as I'll be doing the baking for our wedding (I have a ton of food allergies and can't get a cake from a bakery) I'll probably just bake a fresh batch of cupcakes for the anniversary. We are doing a cupcake tower with a miniature cake for cutting anyway. I've made these cupcakes and the frosting dozens of times at this point, so I don't think it'll be a big deal to bake another batch for the anniversary.

We are not saving our top tier of our cake, because the venue we have our wedding ask us to call them two weeks before our anniversary and the will make the exact top tier cake so that way we don’t need to eat frozen cake

We decided not to do this as we will be moving after the honeymoon to a different state and more than likely will be in a small apartment with little fridge/freezer space. Instead, we will be going back to the bakery who did our cake and splitting a mini version on our anniversary.

Not saving it for our 1 year anniversary but we are taking it with us on the honeymoon. I bake alot of cakes and cupcakes so recreating it on our anniversary or baking him another favorite flavor will make it just as special.

This started because you were supposed to use the top tier to celebrate either the birth or conception of your first child. Not sure when it changed to one year anniversary but FH and I will be doing this and all married couples I know have done this. If stored correctly it will taste just as good as it did the day of.

The bakery we're choosing offers your anniversary cake free, so we're just going to do that instead.
