Does anyone save the top tier of their cake anymore?

Lauren, on February 9, 2018 at 4:34 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 77

I'm curious if anyone is planning on saving or has saved the top tier of their wedding cake for their first anniversary? I know this used to be something people did but not sure if it's necessary or if it's even good a year after.

All of my married friends have done this. Nowadays nothing with a wedding is necessary. If you don't want it, don't keep it.

We are saving ours! The baker making our cake is going to provide us with everything we need to wrap it up and freeze it!

We didn’t. Our bakery offered a small anniversary cake, and this saved us some money because we could use the top tier for guests.

We are doing a cupcake tower, and saving the top cake as our one year.

So we get to keep the tradition, without the entire cake lol

Yes! We did! And the cake was delicious!

It came in a regular cardboard pastry box, so first I sealed every edge of the box with packing tape. Then wrapped it in a few layers of saran wrap, followed by a couple layers of aluminum foil, and put the whole box in the freezer. I called our bakery to ask how to defrost it, and they said take it out of the freezer 48 hours before you want to eat it, and let it defrost in the fridge until you're ready to eat it. We did that and it was perfectly fresh tasting.

I discovered when we opened it, however, that it wasn't actually the top tier from the wedding cake. Our bakery had just made us a separate, 6" cake to freeze. Our wedding cake was decorated in fondant, this was just done in buttercream, but the same cake and filling flavors.

No, we didn't save it for our anniversary, but rather, we took it home to eat during the week. That is what a lot of bakers will recommend now so you can enjoy your cake (at the wedding you don't actually get to eat much of it unless you make a point to). Then on our one year anniversary we'll have a smaller cake made to celebrate.

We're not saving it, I'm picky about leftovers and the thought of eating year-old cake seems gross and sad to us. Like Sarah said, some bakers will make a fresh "top tier" for your anniversary at no extra charge. Ours doesn't unfortunately, but we won't be in the same city as our wedding next year anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Lately the bakeries my friends have hired have provided a free anniversary cake, which is a replica of the top layer so people don't have to save the top of it. I had a friend save hers and she said it was gross lol

Our baker said a lot of people switched from “a year” to the next day . So we are saving for the next day, since we may not have time to enjoy the day of

I can’t imagine we’ll do this, freezer real estate is very precious in our house haha...also neither of us cares about cake.
but people definitely still do it! Think some keep better than others, my friends who recently celebrated their anniversary took one bite and threw out the rest, said it was horrible. But I still think the idea is fun

I’m not, I’ve been told it gets stale even if you freeze it and it doesn’t taste good. No point to me

We did not. We have a small fridge, so that space is needed. We took our top tier with us on our two week honeymoon and ate it all. We will order a single tier from the bakery (its free) for our anniversary.

We sorta did and sorta didn't.

We were worried that the entire cake wouldn't be good a year later, so the week after the wedding we basically had a piece of cake every night. We saved only two pieces, so if it sucks, it's not like we didn't get to enjoy it, but if it's good, then we get to have a nice little treat Smiley smile

We didn't! It was boxed up for us and we brought it home, but honestly, we live in a 500sqft house with a small freezer and it was taking up valuable space, so I tossed it after a few days. Neither of us even really like cake 😂

I was also pretty pissed about our cake, since it wasn't at all what I ordered (and paid a LOT of money for), so I rather not resurface the one thing I didn't like about my wedding haha.

When my best friend got married, she saved the top tier of her cake. I've been meaning to ask her if she still has it.
