Does anyone save the top tier of their cake anymore?

I'm curious if anyone is planning on saving or has saved the top tier of their wedding cake for their first anniversary? I know this used to be something people did but not sure if it's necessary or if it's even good a year after.

We saved ours!! For about a month. LOL!! I just couldn’t wait to eat it! It was a coconut rum cake and was AMAZING! I wish we would have saved it. It’s a fun tradition. Sure you can always get a new one but that doesn’t really take you back to the day.

We did not save our top tier! Smiley surprise

We have an "apartment sized" fridge in our tiny DC apartment, so even if we could fit it in the freezer - it would have taken up the whole freezer for a year!

Our venue also had a great alternative offer - if you go back to the venue for dinner on the weekend on your one year anniversary they will serve you cake with your wedding cake & icing flavor combo! Smiley heart

My first wedding many moons ago, we saved our cake and it was nasty when we tried to defrost and eat a year later (I guess that said something lol). I am a baker with a small bakery and I make my clients, as PP's have stated, an anniversary cake. They just need to order it ahead of time.

I was planning on doing this. I've known a lot of people that did and it does keep for a year (in a good, temperature-stable freezer, of course!)

The only reason I'm not is that my bakery will make us a free anniversary cake included in the cake package Smiley smile I think a lot of bakeries are doing this now, if you haven't bought your cake yet you can look and see who offers it!

We aren't because part of the package for our venue is an "anniversary package" and it comes with a small cake.

I'm a baker and doing our cake myself. I like the tradition and I am not afraid to do it because I know how to properly wrap a cake. I would suggest talking to your baker for best results, but all you really need to do is neatly wrap the cake in saran wrap (1-2 layers), then wrap it in foil and close the edges tightly. After that you can put it in your box and in a ziplock bag, or put it in an airtight tupperware and then in a bag. These steps are absolutely NECESSARY to make your cake fresh as day 1. Take it out of the freezer and defrost it in the refrigerator. If it is a good cake, it will freeze well. No doubts about it.

When my friend got married, the bakery that she went with (and the one that I would like to hire too) said they would make a replica of the top tier for their anniversary, so they wouldn't have to freeze it. Freezer space is pretty minimal, so if I can maximize my freezer space, and have a fresh cake for my anniversary, I'm all for it!

I was curious about how to preserve it. I saw a couple on youtube eat their top tier after a year and they said it was horrible. So I guess they didn't preserve it properly.

As part of our order, our baker will bake us a cake on our First Year Anniversary. . .same flavors etc.

We are! Even though the baker said that he would make us a fresh one on our anniversary. I just like the tradition of it and just in case if we decide to eat it before then, at least we know we'll still be good. : )

Our baker will remake our top tier on our anniversary. We froze it and ate it on our one month.

We saved two slices and gave the rest away because our top tier was massive. We can also ask for a fresh one for our anniversary as well if we want more cake.

Our baker provides an anniversary tier. Therefore, there's no need to keep or freeze.

My baker includes a first anniversary cake with each wedding cake you order. No need to save and eat gross cake later.

I think most people do it, but it's not required. We haven't signed a contract with a baker yet, but the one we are likely to go with will actually make us a fresh cake for our first anniversary for free. If they didn't do that or if we go with someone else, we will probably save the top tier.

Our baker boxes the top tier up for couples and in its place, does a fake top.

I will be saving mine only because Im old fashion! I was told it's not all that great to eat a year later! I just think it's special to have it to cut and taste a year later and look back on that day when you said I do! But yea! it's a waste of money to save it if you don't want to.

Maybe we will pull it out after 6 months! Then get a fresh one for the year! I don't know of a bakery here in Hawaii that offers a fresh one year anniversary cake. You all are lucky!
