Generally, we decide on actual large purchases like appliances, plane tickets, etc. together. Checking with each other would really only need to be done for "shared" money, neither of us needs to check in about what we spend out of our own accounts.
It fluctuates, same as our finances do. We normally discuss anything that costs more than $50, but sometimes we're at a point where we discuss whether or not we should be ordering out. 🤷
Since married, we do. But we did not merge finances on everything until married, just a wedding account, and rent and bills account during the 5 months we were engaged and lived together. And we spent our own separate money on big things planned long before we were together or were engaged, the way we had originally planned as individuals, no consultation needed.
I don't now since we do not live together yet or have conjoined finances, but once we are married we agreed that we would consult each other before any major purchases over $500.
Currently we have separate accounts and I take care of the bills and he pays for the wedding stuff. We both allocate money to ourselves from each pay check and can do what we like with that. We plan to continue something similar when we marry. BUT we still tend to check in with each other if it’s large purchases.
