Do we really need steak at our reception?

Nay, on August 27, 2013 at 1:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 44

It seems like once you get less than 1 year away, you start really crunching numbers. Sheesh. That's what hubby and I have been doing. We cut our list already and are now looking at the per person meal rate. There is a $12.95 difference per person if we do only chicken and fish, as opposed to chicken, fish and steak. Doesn't seem like a lot but multiply that by 68 which is what our count is now including us and it's a nice chunk of $. So, do we really need steak? If you were a guest, would it matter the only choices were chicken or fish?

Girl steak at the reception is a huge deal! I've never been to a reception who had steak....they will be just fine with chicken and fish. I don't think it's necessary...it's all about what you want. Guests are getting a free meal....they'll be happy either way.

I love steak, however I will never order it at a wedding because 99% of the time you have no say as to what temperature yours is cooked to. I personally wouldn't miss it at a wedding.

I definitely don't think you need steak! We are doing chicken and salmon!

Thanks STBMsMullings. That what we were talking about too over the weekend. I love a good steak, but like you said usually when I go receptions there's chicken or fish and that's it.

I'm the guest that only orders the steak & so is FH. I don't like chicken & he doesn't eat fish. I'd be a little annoyed but I wouldn't complain to you.

Don't go into debt over beef (it's always what I chose, but chicken is fine as long as it's boneless). Almost everyone you meet will either like chicken or fish. Frankly, I bet your guests would like it even better if you took that $880 you'd be spending on 68 steak dishes and put it towards alcohol, lol.

Thanks ladies. All valid points. And I just had a thought too based on what LadyCrystal just said. If I had that option and no one ordered steak, I would not be a happy camper. Looks like the verdict is chicken and fish. It doesn't matter to hubby either way.

@Centerpieces No way going into debt. This is a cash event. lol The price per person includes the alcohol. But that $880 could go to another vendor, our second honeymoon.

    Cut it

I almost always order the vegetarian option at weddings because I'm never sure how well things will be cooked en masse.

On the phone with hubby now. No steak is the final verdict. And we're cutting two apps off our cocktail hour too. Sent an email to the venue and found out if we cut 2 apps, that is $6.00 per person off too. Cha Ching.

If people want steak, they can book a reservation at a fancy steak restaurant the day before or after your wedding. No way should you spend THAT much more per person just because some people may demand steak!

No one demanded steak. It was an option we were considering. But it's no longer a factor. Steak is off the menu Smiley smile

The way I see it, you aren't going to please everyone. If you order steak you will have those that say they dont like it. If you don't order steak you'll have those that will say they want it.

Just do what is in your budget and what you enjoy!!

I'd be annoyed if there wasn't an attempt at a vegan option - so obviously it would not bother me if there was no steak Smiley smile

Not having steak. Chicken and fish it is. Not worried about stomachs not being filled. We're having a cocktail hour with 6 passed hors d'oeurves and 2 carving stations, and a sit down dinner with appetizer, chicken or fish option with sides and dessert. I'm sure everyone will have their fill.
