Do we really need steak at our reception?

It seems like once you get less than 1 year away, you start really crunching numbers. Sheesh. That's what hubby and I have been doing. We cut our list already and are now looking at the per person meal rate. There is a $12.95 difference per person if we do only chicken and fish, as opposed to chicken, fish and steak. Doesn't seem like a lot but multiply that by 68 which is what our count is now including us and it's a nice chunk of $. So, do we really need steak? If you were a guest, would it matter the only choices were chicken or fish?

We had steak at ours, but only because the price difference wasn't big at all. and i must have gotten lucky, because the steak they served was AMAZING. i had people telling us it was the best steak they'd ever had. and this was in a ski lodge. still baffled by it.

but most weddings i've gone to where i got steak...meh. nothing amazing. i think chicken or fish is a perfectly fine offering! and most venues will do a vegetarian meal for those who need one!

I think Amy's right...even the very, very expensive weddings I've gone to, the steak seems overdone.

DH & I never request the steak -- he's afraid it will be overcooked and I'm afraid it will be undercooked!

I think not having chicken would be the bigger sin, which is not something you have to worry about with your choices Smiley smile

Wow I've never heard of a banquet of any kind not having a beef option. I'm not saying you have to have it, but I've never been to a wedding that didn't. I don't eat fish and can only tolerate chicken. If I'm giving $300 as a gift for us as a couple, there had better be filet mignon on the menu.

But that's just me. Not everyone feels that strongly about it. And if it's a real financial issue, skip it and spend the extra on your honeymoon.

I say it really depends on your guests, if you know you have a lot of guests who love steak, then you may want to consider keeping it.

    Personally, I would skip it.

Our guests are pretty easy going. Not worried about disappointing anyone. And I don't think our guests will determine the value of our gift by our menu.

Since we are having a carving station during our cocktail hour, our coordinator at the venue recommended choosing a beef option. One of the options is Marinated London Broil. Nice compromise.

You don't need it. We're doing chicken and salmon because the steak was a lot more expensive. It adds up. It sounds like you will have plenty of food, so if they go home hungry, that's their problem! The beef option at the carving station sounds like a great option! No one should be complaining.

Steak can be tricky considering people like their steak cooked different. I recommend cutting it off your menu! Smiley smile

We didn't even consider steak. We went straight for the salmon and then chose chicken as the 2nd protein. We also have a pasta salad that any vegetarians can choose.

I would forget the steak and do anything BUT that. At my sister's wedding last year they did steak and it was terrible. As much as you pay for catering, you would think it would at least be decent, but it wasn't even close to that. It was cold when it was served, and I was one of the first ones to be served! Plus, some people can be too picky about how it is cooked.

Glad I asked. Got a lot of good tips that made me think and the steak will not be missed. And hubby and I discussed it further (yes he is VERY involved) and in addition to the london broil at the carving station we can a beef option to our passed hors d'oeurves. We have a choice of 8 passed so at least 1 could be beef.

Depends on what the steak is; filet is pretty manageable, easy to cook to order, easy to eat. Prime rib is messy, has a bone and the serving is way too large.

Almost every wedding I ever catered had filet mignon and a non beef; chicken or fish.

Why don't you bag the carving station and put that money into the entree? That makes more sense.

I love steak. Yet the greatest wedding meals I have had never involved steak. I say go chicken or fish and put the money toward something else, wedding related or non wedding related.

It's more of a difference cost wise cutting the steak entree option than the carving station. After all the great tips and advice from earlier (thanks ladies), this is me and hubby's final decision and we're comfortable with this option.

Like many on this, i have never had steak at a wedding - chicken, fish, pork, and pasta is all i have ever seen.

i think steak brings in another logistical thing, besides money - how it is cooked. is it buffet style or per plate? steak sitting out on warmers will cook more, so you could end up with well, well, well done steak! and (at least in my family) people are extremely picky about how it is cooked - rare, medium, etc... so that could be another factor.

    but i do love steak!

i say go with what you can afford! this is your night, that much money could go towards something else you want!

Wedding steak is often too dry! chicken and/or fish is great.
