Do we invite his ex-wife??

This is my first (hopefully only) marriage and I want it to be special. My fiancé has been married previously and has two young daughters with his ex. He really wants them to be a part of the wedding, and I agreed that it would be a special memory. However, the question of whether to invite his ex-wife popped up and I'm not sure how to take it. At first, I didn't really care and he said it was up to me -- however, now, whenever we discuss wedding plans with his side of the family, they bring her up. They compare the details of my plans to the way my FH and his ex's wedding was ... I tried to brush it off because it seemed petty...but now it just seems to be sucking all the excitement and joy right out of me Smiley sad Ultimately, I think this if she's there, I won't feel as happy ... I know I need to say something to my FH soon, but I'm not sure how to approach it. And how can I kindly ask his family to stop comparing me to his ex?

Honestly, they're probably doing it to show that they care and they don't want anything about your wedding to remind guests of his last wedding. And no, don't invite her. His parents can be the caretakers that day. My bestie got married a few years ago and is a step mom now. They had his that whole weekend and their aunt and uncle and grandparents scheduled who would take care of them the whole weekend and switched back and forth. The boys were just excited to be a part of it. And they loved chillin' with their uncle!

My FH's ex wife wants to be invited as well. I'm not inviting her no matter what. It's my day and I wouldn't be comfortable with her there!

I would be the 20 billionth person to say "she doesn't need to be invited". It would be awkward for her, most likely. I'm not an ex wife, and my H has never been married, but I just know I'd feel awkward in the situation, even if we were on very good terms. I don't think anyone expects her to be invited, either.

I almost put (good) ex's in the category of good coworkers who I just chose not to invite. We are on good terms, we work together, and you'll likely be in my life for an extended period of time...but...nope. The relationship changed the moment they got divorced.

It sucks they are comparing weddings...but I really think that is the risk you have to take marrying someone who has previously been married. I'm not saying it's right, but try not to let it get to you. I'd highly recommend speaking up to whomever is making those comments about his previous wedding. Tell them you find it in poor taste and would appreciate the comments stop or you will be discontinuing the conversation.

@Corrine P. - My FH's family is the same way - Every time we get together, they bring her up. I understand she was a part of the family and the mother of his children but it kinda makes me feel less important. .. I think all the stress of wedding planning has me overthinking everything. I'll mention my feelings to my FH so he can try to say something to his family. I just don't want our day or any part of our future to be less exciting ...

I can't imagine she would WANT to be there either. Is there someone who can bring the girls so she doesn't have to come? If you feel uncomfortable, then it's a no brainer if she is invited or not. As for talking to his family---that's a tough one. I would go the easy way out and tell HIM to tell them to STOP. But that's me. Good luck.

Absolutely not. Have the kids there and then tell her to pick them up at a certain time. Put our foot down with the family.

That's rude as hell for his family to do? I would say something now until you live the rest of your life annoyed by them.

ETA: to answer the actual question, I wouldn't invite her, no way

Yeah, no way. First, his family is being completely inconsiderate of you and unless you and she are friends, having her at the wedding would just be WEIRD. No way, no how.

I would for sure!! We made sure to invite DHs ex and her family. After all, we are all blending families together. Geesh so many of you are being bridezillas making that one day all about you. It's about family.

    Lol @ Shelby.

    That's funny.

"As a general rule, if there is someone that's had your FHs penis inside them, you should NOT invite them to your wedding." So...2 members of our bridal party, and at least 2 guests. And that's just him, not even taking into consideration me and my partners.

OP: If you were friends with her, it would be different, but I agree with most previous posters.

your FH needs to shut his family down when they start comparing things. Its NOT ok for them to do that.

As they say in "How I Met Your Mother", never invite an ex to your wedding.

I'm sorry you have to deal with comparisons. I would say something to the effect of what Kimi said, or, I'm not her and I'm asking you to be supportive of our future together, and not of their past.

Jazmin your comment is offensive to people named Jose implying they can never do anything right.

I personally wouldn't have an issue with inviting my FH's ex if she's not a bad person. I think it is wrong of the family to keep talking about her and their wedding but if you and your FH have no issues with her then I don't see why you should exclude her at least as a courtesy especially if her children will be in your wedding.

I think inviting her would be a great idea. I don't see what the big deal is.
