If you don't use it now, you're not going to magically have a different lifestyle after you get married....

I think it's ok to still register but I'd also add a nice cheaper set for daily use. I've been with FH for 7 years so we only added things that could be a daily use. But honestly I didn't want a registry since we have everything.

We did not. We would never use it, and it would just take up space

It's up to you. I agree with registering for something more inexpensive though too.

I would prefer having China that was handed down from my mother or grandmother.... I think that everyday plates can be nice enough to host fancy dinners! All personal preference..

We did not register for fine China I'll eventually get my mother's. The everyday dishes we did register for are on the nicer side.

I did! Not fancy china but a set of porcelain dinnerware.

We did nicer everyday dishes. I figured if I ever did get China, I'd like for it to be passed down through my family.

I don't see it as problem to register for it. I wouldn't because I have no need for it. We have a specific type of dishes set we use for everything that will be added but not China. If you would use China (I.e., event lifestyle) then go for it! But if you don't have that lifestyle now, I wouldn't expect that to change after marriage.

We registered for plain white everyday dishes (I think around $30 for service for 4 - and we got 3 sets of those) and we registered for nicer dishes ($100 for service for 4, plus the extras we would want for holiday meals).

Although I will likely be getting 2 or 3 sets of formal silver and China from my mother someday - we plan to have holidays at our house before that day. Our nice dishes are not too expensive I can't replace them, and they're white and silver so I can mix and match with my daily dishes for a party of more than 12.

Comically, DH picked out the nice dishes, and his brother and SIL have the same set. Between us we can host a party of 20 with all matching dishes. Haha

20 years ago maybe. It's going the way of sterling silver I think. We got a few pieces but it stays in the cupboard and has to be polished. Formal china is okay for Christmas but it usually goes back in a box. I don't know anybody who does formal much anymore.

That's definitely something more rare nowadays, but if you throw dinner parties and holidays with the families often then it may be something to invest in. My FH and I have already lived together for a few years so we have an everyday set, but we registered for a nicer, matching set which we can also use everyday, but it's basically just an upgrade

I'm getting my mom's, so we didn't - but like PPs, my parents only used it on big holidays, and that's probably what we'll end up doing too

If you think you'll use it though, there's no reason not to

When I got married (over three decades ago), I didn't really have a choice. My MIL told me I was registering for china because that's what her family gave for wedding gifts. So, I picked a pattern and was loaded with it (and serving pieces). Initially, I thought it was stupid, but to this day, I use it for every holiday (plus, we threw a lot of dinner parties when we were younger, and I always used it for those). It's a nice luxury to have, and it does add a certain elegance to the meal.

We didn't. We registered for some nice dinner sets that are mid-range. We actually registered for two: one for daily use and one for company.

I registered for China! I am really glad I did! My china is the Lenox Federal Platinum set. I got many of my china pieces including a platter, serving bowl, gravy boat, and multiple place settings. They were all given to me by female family members. My mom has made it a tradition of purchasing a place setting for Christmas each year for me, which she probably will continue until I have the complete set. I have 6 place settings, so I can host a proper dinner. I made sure I registered for china that was dishwasher safe, and also the place settings that did not include tea cups because I knew I would never use those!

I did not register for daily dishes because I already had them (we already lived together and bought our house together 2 years before our wedding). I did register for a platter, a couple serving bowls, and appetizer plates that coordinated with my daily dishes as well as for new silverware and serving utensils. This is why I never understand people who say "we already live together, we have everything we need, blah blah blah I want a honeyfund" lol.

ETA: I host meals for our family holidays because DH's parents are divorced and our house is good neutral ground. I know that I will host holiday dinners for my own family when DH and I have children one day. I also registered for crystal drinking goblets and got those, too!

That's a great pattern, annakay. It's incredibly versatile and will work with literally any color scheme. And Lenox...very classy.

Some do, some don't. Many people expect to inherit good china from grandparents, etc. so no need. Will you have room in wherever you are living?

@Rachel D Thank you!! I love it Smiley smile I think having a dishwasher safe set is key because then I look forward to pulling them out and using them instead of dreading the clean up haha.

We registered for a set of nicer everyday dishes from pottery barn. We didn't have a need for fine china.
