Do many people have backyard weddings in a vacation home?

Ashley, on July 16, 2011 at 10:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi! I'm new around here and newly engaged. My fiancee would really love for us to rent a place in Arizona and use their backyard. The problem is that we haven't found a yard big enough for 50-100 people (maybe even less). We would really like some mountain views too. Our family members would be staying in local hotels. We would like a rental home, because we could just stay there, it would be secluded. Plus, I think we would have a pig roast (yes, what can I say, we're classy). Not even sure where we could look. However, I'm still not completely sold on the idea probably because I haven't found a place yet. Does anyone know of any good rental homes in the AZ area that might have a big back yard? Or have you had a backyard wedding? Would you do it all over again?

You may find it hard to find a rental property that will allow this. In most instances, clauses in the lease for rental properties limit the use of the property in ways that preclude large parties of any kind.

I would just look around but in all honesty you would have to talk to the owners or property owners. That is a LARGE liability cause is ONE of your 100 gets hurts, its on them not you. PLus a Pig roast fire... idk. to me, the idea is freakin awesome.... but just not sure how an owner may feel. maybe find a nice hall or hotel that will accomodate?!

We rented a villa in Mexico and had the wedding on the beach and the reception in the backyard. We had a small wedding though, only 35 people. It worked out great and I loved that at the end of the night we were 2 feet away from our bedroom. We had a wedding planner, so she organized everything from the tables to the flowers.

2d bride- Thank you all for your suggestions - I agree that finding a house might be a little difficult and I didn't think about the liability issue.

Sabrina - thank you sooooooooooooooooooooo much! I've personally wanted a barn wedding. I find them to be beautiful. When I looked, I gasped. I will def. be checking that out. I'm sooo excited because I found a place in MI that was a barn and soooo beautiful, but, my fiancee doesn't want to get married in MI and I was heartbroken. So thank you sooooo much for finding this for me - it is making me sooooo unbelieveably happy and I'm exicted to check it out (maybe even at the open house this Tuesday) Smiley smile

Sharon - I never thought about Mexico. I'm still a little scared about going anywhere close to it (even though I shouldn't be). Maybe I will have to look into getting a wedding planner so I won't feel so overwhelmed. Thank you very much.

Check out vacationrentals.com, vacationhomerentals.com and homeaway.com. They have places all over the country.

But I agree with 2d. You'll have a hard time finding a place that will allow that. Think of it this way- in their eyes, you're renting their house not for a vacation- but for a huge party. Plenty of people and alcohol... They aren't going to want that.

But they will also require at least a week's rental no matter where you go. So, make sure it's the honeymoon destination as well.

First welcome to the WW family... I don't think there is anything wrong with a backyard wedding... In fact if I could find a place I probably would do the same!!! You have plenty of time to look for a place, but I must say i agree with Meghan and 2d you are going to have a hard time finding a place that will allow you to do that! Best of luck and happy wedding planning!

My mom rents vacation homes as a side business & she had rented homes to people for weddings. I almost booked one BUT, there is a week minimum. &You can't be loud past about 10 if there are close neighbors. Pig roast? Love this! My mom would be all for it but you'd have to rent somewhere that the people are relaxed enough. It really depends on who you rent from. If its what you want, take the time to search. &Sorry were in WI or I'd help you out more!

I am doing a backyard wedding at an historical home in Florida... I actually found it while sifting through venues on the "vendor" tab either on this website or weddingbee. I found 2 in my area during my search. The one we went with has room for 12 to stay the night before and the night of our wedding, and room for almost 200 on the property. Just do some thorough digging, I know you can find something!!

We are heavily encouraged to get insurance (we would want to, anyway), and we still would have to rent the tent, etc. The place we selected allows us to buy alcohol, etc. at Costco or BJ's, so that will cut down on paying outrageous prices for beer/wine/liquor that we would have paid at a more traditional venue. Some say the backyard-tent-wedding thing turns out costing more, but luckily for us it all evens out within a couple hundred bucks of using an events center.

Welcome to WW! Congrats on your engagement!

I would also think there would be liability and insurance issues.

We are having a DW in Vermont. The majority of our 60 guests are staying in the same small B&B , so we can all roll back to our rooms after a night of partying. It is the wedding of our dreams.

However, I have to tell you. Initially, it was so darn fun and romantic. We love this place and visit it with riding group each year. However, since my venue has never had a wedding, and we are pretty particular on certain issues, it is a lot of work. I should have hired a Wedding Planner. While I have a DOC, I can tell you quite honestly, we are going to have to rent a U-Haul to get all of our stuff up there.

    Good luck!
