Do I have to wear make-up?!

K-Aus, on September 30, 2017 at 8:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 68

I. Never. Wear. Make-up. If I wear anything it's just mascara and lipstick or lip gloss, and maybe MAYBE eye shadow. I look like a sad deer when I wear eyeliner. I've been looking back at photos for others' weddings where I have worn make-up and the ones where I was wearing foundation and everything just do NOT look like me. My hair stylist/friend just got married and suggested I look into airbrush, but I'm afraid I'll look back at photos and think "WHO IS THAT?" Thoughts? Suggestions? Any other non-make-up wearers out there who can weigh in?

I didn't wear makeup! I'm like you, barely wear makeup. It was a relief to not wear it honestly.

Kristin, it sounds like you feel very passionately about this. I think it is absolutely okay to pass on wearing make-up. You want to feel like yourself and comfortable, if you feel this way it will show whether you wear make-up or not. I rarely wear make-up either, and have gone through this same conundrum myself for our wedding that is coming up in a couple weeks. I have determined that I am going to see how I feel that day. I am getting ready by myself and doing my own hair and possibly make-up, so I can choose what I want without the pressure of others. I may go au- natural. Otherwise, if I feel inspired, it may just be a little eyeliner, tinted chapstick, and possibly a little foundation under my eyes. I would say if you do anything at all, stick with the mascara, lipgloss (and maybe eye shadow) like you would in the situations wear you have worn make up. Be yourself, and trust your instincts. You can't get it wrong. Smiley smile

If you don't want to wear makeup, don't wear it! More power to you! You'll look absolutely beautiful either way. If you're marrying a man, I assume he won't be wearing makeup in the pictures and no one will think he looks washed out Smiley smile (I'm wearing a full face of makeup, professionally done, cuz I want to and don't ever do my own makeup so I don't feel confident)

I, similar to yourself, do not wear make up at all. Mascara is the most for a fancy dinner. For my wedding though I want to look flawless in every single picture. No dark spots, no scars, none of that showing in my pics when I look back at them.

I'm doing air brush and I like that she can control the amount of coverage with it still feeling super light. For my engagement photos she did a light to medium coverage for my boudoir she did more medium coverage.

I hate when people try to tell you you'll somehow looked super washed out in pictures. You may to them. But if you don't wear makeup all the time- I don't think you should wear it. And if you do just very basic. I don't think you need a professional, while that's nice. You can if you want to. It's your perogative You can- but you should be comfortable. I get headaches from makeup and don't want one, so I will take it easy on the makeup. I have more pictures without makeup than with.

I'm unfortunately allergic to make up. I keep trying different brands. Do what makes you comfortable

Ultimately it's up to you, I like how I look in pictures better when I wear makeup so I will be wearing it. I don't wear makeup everyday but I do often enough that it's not weird to me.

Personally, I feel like wearing some makeup is part dressing up for a nice event, so I'd feel odd wearing a very formal gown and no makeup. I'm guessing those times where you do put some makeup on are for special events? Your wedding is definitely a special event.

I felt like I looked like me after my makeup trial, although I am used to seeing myself in a good amount of makeup. Any professional would be able to give you a natural look.

You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. One suggestion though, if you do decide to wear makeup, get an expert. If you're not used to applying makeup you don't want to have to be in charge of it on your wedding day. Even a bit of mascara and lipstick for a natural look.

With professional photography you may look washed out. Why not do a makeup trial and see which looks better personally to you?

I hardly ever wear make up but I am for the wedding. If you don't want to then don't! You want to feel confident and comfortable. Another thing to think about is rubbing your eyes. I always forget I'm wearing make up, rub my eyes, and half of it smears down my face. Every time. Lol!

I agree w those who say do a makeup trial. If you don't like it, no need to use it for the wedding!

I never wear makeup. Ever. Did a trial with airbrush and it was too much for me. Still had makeup done for the wedding. No foundation though. No airbrush. Eyes, lips and cheeks. My MUA worked with me to find something that I loved. I agree with @fallin- it's a special day. You reserve makeup for special occasions. This is one of, if not the most special ones you will have.

I don't wear makeup day to day (really only if I'm going out) but I did wear makeup on my wedding day. I told my MUA that I wanted a really natural look and that I just wanted to look like the best possible version of myself that I could. She didn't go overboard (I tried false lashes at my trial and HATED the way they looked) and I was really happy with it and my photos came up really well.

I rarely wear makeup and am experimenting with things like "primer" and "liquid eyeliner."

Still, if you feel so strongly about this, I would say do what makes you feel comfortable! People who don't usually wear make up usually opt to do so at their wedding for the pictures. Still, it's a personal choice.

Find the photographer you want to use and then I'd recommend scheduling an engagement session. Once you get those pictures back, then you can gauge how you look in professional photos and go from there.

I have no real desire to wear makeup, but I do want a red lip so I'm planning to try airbrush. If I can't handle the airbrush though, yeah, makeup isn't happening except for those red lips.

Here's what I have to say on this topic. I'm a daily no-makeup person, and I read all the WW forum reasons to wear makeup on your wedding day with incredulity. I didn't believe the other posters, and even argued with them. Passionately.

Until we got our e-pics back.

I wish I'd listened, because they were correct and I do look washed out in those professional photos.

So do whatever you want, @Kristin. But I wish I'd listened to WW users who knew better, and had worn makeup for my e-pics. I'll definitely be doing it for my wedding.

ETA I used ALLLL the excuses/arguments. You only think women look washed out because we've become accustomed to seeing women wearing makeup; I'm perfectly happy and comfortable with how I look without it; if my FH doesn't 'have' to wear makeup it's ludicrous that I 'have' to because presumably he also has skin and will be in the same pictures that I will, etc. My own face looking at our pro e-pics shut me up. That's all I'm saying.
