Do any of you feel that the back of your e-ring is really REALLY thin?? EDITED W/ PIC!!

Do you have a picture so we can get an idea of how thin it is? I am always afraid of scratching mine (and have even apologized to it when I have whacked it against something)

I think it would have to be a loooong time/poor constructed ring/cheaper metal for it to actually wear down.. but then again, I am not qualified to make those kinds of statements so I don't know lol

Mine was extremely thin and I was worried it would eventually break so we had it made thicker. It cost a pretty penny for the white gold but totally worth it!

It's 14k White Gold.

Mine is very similar - but rose gold. If I saw that is seemed thinner, I could always bring it in to get the gold built up or something. It takes a looong time for gold to wear down (it doesn't actualy wear away, it simply thins out a little as it stretches).

Yep, that's what I was looking for, FutureMrsWade. It looks fine to me, but you're the one wearing it. If you feel it's getting too thin, then take it to the jeweler and ask them to remedy the situation.

Gold jewelry is measured in karats, so 14K is more expensive than 10K. In a piece of 10K jewelry, the composition is 10 parts gold and 14 parts less precious metals. A 10K piece is a little over 40% gold. In a 14K piece, the composition is 14 parts of gold to every ten 10 parts of less precious metal. Of course, the 14K piece is worth more, but the 10K piece is more durable (besides values, the 14K piece also has a better color). If you want a durable piece that you're going to wear everyday while you are engaged in whatever physical work you're engaged in, 10K is the better choice. Perhaps your jeweler could build up the back of the ring with 10K gold. It's something to think about if you plan to wear your e-ring every day, year in and year out.

My original engagement ring was set in a 14K white gold setting. After fifteen years of constant wear, the back of the ring split -- vertically. I wasn't afraid of loosing it, but that vertical slice pinched my finger. I was a busy mom (as are you -- you said on another post that you have five or six children), so your hands aren't being pampered. I would suggest you either take it off at home or take it to a jeweler.

It doesn't feel too thin, I just worry about it when I take it off and SEE how thin it looks. My grandfather was a jeweler, so I understand that the lower the karat the more durable it is, the higher the "softer", for lack of a better word. It's only 4 years old, and hasn't been worn every day since we initially got engaged. But as a general rule, I do *try* to wear it all the time with a few exceptions. It does have the extended warranty, and goes in this month for it's semi-annual "check-up", so I'll have them look at it and ask them. And if nothing else, in 7 months it will be put in an enhancer that has bars, or brackets that connect the each side of the enhancer, so the e-ring basically sits inside it. From then on that will be what is wearing and rubbing against my skin, not the e-ring. So hopefully, if it is too thin, that *should* protect it.... I hope, anyway.

My first engagement ring I got was that thin. And during the process of re-making the ring, the jewelers kept telling me that it was too thin and would wear away eventually. They even told me that my band (purchased as a set) that was the same thickness, would last maybe a few years before I would have to buy another ring. So, when they agreed to re-make both rings finally, they made them both thicker and have stronger prongs.

If it makes you feel any better - my e-ring band looks almost exactly like yours except in yellow gold (can't remember the karats), with a different setting obviously, but the band size is the same. Thicker at the setting, narrowed at the base. The e-ring was originally owned by my husband's great grandmother and was then passed down to him and given to me. So it's pretty old. And it's still in the original setting and original band.

Nothing wrong with taking it to a jeweler and getting an opinion about widening the base of the band. And if it worries you, that's probably what I would do. But I'm just letting you know that my ring has lasted a really long time.

That's weird. I have seen that happen to really old rings that have been worn for many many years. But never newer rings.

You can take your ring to a jeweller though and have them build it back up. My mom had it done once to her ring and you could never tell anything had been done.
