DIY Wedding Music

Rachelle, on June 6, 2014 at 6:47 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 8

We are having a laid back and fairly small wedding. We are not the dance floor and dj type of people. I need help figuring out what I will need to simply make a playlist and have a speaker outside and a speaker inside. Or I would appreciate any other ideas!

Is your question what you need to just make a playlist? You can do that in iTunes, or if your iTunes library isn't that big you can use Spotify. The only thing with Spotify is that they have very annoying ads if you just use the free service. Spotify Premium is $10 a month I believe, but you can get a 30-day free trial. No matter which you use (regular or premium) you still have access to more music that you know what to do with.

If this doesn't answer your question, I'm sorry...

Thank you. Honestly I don't know what my question is, I am not good at the technical stuff would I just need speakers and a laptop or iPod to play the music? Or is it more complicated then that?

We are doing our own music and using an Ipod and renting a speaker, plus a cord to connect it. If you don't have too big of a space, i would guess you could use a small sound system that has a plug in for an ipod

didn't try it out yet.. but i am planning on using it. and we will get one of the usher to be responsible for keeping the music going.

I am using songza. Songza is free and it has play lists already to use or you could drag from the list and create your own. good luck!

We are also considering doing our own music instead of a DJ to save money. Our venue has hookups to their overhead speakers that we can use.

How are you all taking care of announcements (first dance, cutting the cake, etc.)? Is anyone else worried about timing your playlist just right?

We're doing our own music. You can make your playlists in iTunes and play it off your iPod/laptop. We're going to mainly use the laptop, and only use the iPods as back-up. Our hall already has a sound system, so you should check with your venue. Laptop speakers will not be loud enough. If you don't have a sound system (big speakers) and neither does your venue, you'll have to rent them. You'll need your MC to do announcements or have a friend act as a "DJ" to make announcements. This friend would also help to make sure the right playlist is on at the right time and that your evening is on track for timing (ie if you want to cut cake around 9 PM he would make the annoucement at 9 pm).

You need several playlists generally...Here's just an example

    Ceremony:

Prelude (while people are being seated)

Processional for bridal party if you don't have a musician

    Processional for bride

Interlude (like when you're signing documents etc -- this is optional)

Recessional (when you walk back down the aisle)

Postlude (while people are filing out).

    Reception:

    Cocktail hour

    Grand entrance

    Dinner music

    First dance

    Dance music

    Cake cutting...etc.
