Disposable wine glasses

Alicia v., on February 13, 2017 at 11:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 26

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Me and FH were going to use nicer looking plastic wine glasses for the wedding since our venue and caterer don't supply glasses. Was wondering if this is 1) tacky . And 2) how this logistically should be placed, at the tables or at the bar? Because I feel people wouldn't want to keep carrying their glass back and forth right?

Maybe this is an obvious answer but we can't figure out what we want to do.

Thanks guys

Well if they are disposable, you should buy enough so that everyone can have one drink per hour. And then round up to the next package quantity.

I do feel that plastic is tacky. Are you having disposable plates or china? If you are not doing disposable plates, I think you should also not do disposable glasses. Check out event rental places near you for a quote on real glass. Again, one drink per hour per guest, then round up (significantly).

I've been to a wedding that used plastic cups for the wine and it wasn't bad. The only reason I really noticed it was because I had been thinking about using plastic as well. If that's the route you decide to go, I promise very few people will notice to remark on it. And yes, they should be left at the bar. A new cup for each new drink.

I am also struggling with this. I have not been able to find nice plastic wine cups. IKEA has wine glasses for less than a dollar each. I ended up going with nice plastic cups (not wine glasses) from Specs wine store. Costco also has a similar style. It's not ideal, but glass wine glasses were not in our budget and do not work in our venue. Good luck!!

I think this is ok for a very casual wedding. I think women in cocktail dresses and men in suits does not match the informality of plastic wine glasses.

I would personally rather have something like this: https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-20144/Cups/Crystal-Clear-Plastic-Squat-Cups-9-oz. As opposed to an actual wine glass in plastic. I went to a wedding recently that had plastic champagne flutes and they were so flimsy and the bottoms just popped off. I would rather drink out of what is obviously a plastic cup than a plastic cup trying to be something it's not.

I don't love plastic glasses for drinks at weddings - it feels much less formal/wedding-like to me- however - if you're going to do it - I would much rather have the first picture I'm posting than the actual "wine glass" type I'm posting second.

They seem much more flimsy and likely to tip over/fall apart.

    ETA: I agree with Katherine

My link goes to a glass much like @Linds' first picture. Ditto everything @Linds said.

I was in a debate with this issue also and I decided to go disposable everything! I'm using plastic as well for the wine glasses and China like plastic plates and plastic silverware looking utensils. It's not tacky since there are really nice ones where you really can't tell a difference!

I was planning on going with disposable cups for beer and wine as well. I'll also put a plug in for trying to find recyclable ones as well, since the waste from non-recyclable glasses is significant. I found a number of good options on amazon.

I'm stuck using plastic. My venue doesn't allow glass at the bar and they mandate that they are the only ones that can provide the bar. I'm not concerned with it though, it just means that no one will cut their feet when someone shatters a glass on the dance floor!

@Zulander - I like your suggestion! Those look really nice!

Thanks all!! We are having a Sunday brunch wedding and the caterers are using higher end plastic dishes so I think if I look into some of the links you provided we might find out solution. Or possibly glass rental as well! I hadn't thought of that .

We are doing just beer at our wedding and decided to get cute plastic cutomizable "solo" cups . The guests will have the option to have their beer in a bottle, or pour it into a thick plastic cup-not the disposable kind. I am also debating between glass/plastic cutlery and plates....the caterer will provide nice and thick plastic, but I do like the idea of china...

Go to Ikea. They sell wine glasses (and champagne flutes!) for less than $1 apiece. If there is no Ikea near you, you can also buy them online.

Rental real glasses may be cheaper, I wouldn't buy a bunch of real wine glasses for one day even if they are cheap, what will you do with all those after? So either rent or buy the disposables you were thinking but I think that will cost more.

I got plastic wine glasses from smartyhadaparty.com. they were awesome quality and really affordable. Just be mindful of the size glass you get, like, an average wine pour is 5 oz so I think I went with an 8 oz glass and it was good. Some are much bigger or smaller and I almost didn't realize it before I ordered. Also make sure they're the kind that are one piece, not the kind that have the bottom screw on. You don't want be screwing the bottoms (lol) onto 100s of glasses, and they notoriously fall apart. I kept my glasses behind the bar for the bartender to use, some people bring their glass back up with them, some get a new one each time, so make sure you get enough for every drink.

Our venue provides plastic cups which are those short super clear cups they sell. I highly doubt anyone would comment about a free drink just because it's in plastic. It's not like it's a red solo cup, which I would not do.
