What should REALLY be on your Registry...

Nicole, on July 13, 2011 at 10:54 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

In a completely non-wedding related internet session, I stumbled across this post and thought I'd share.

http://robertfulghum.com/index.php/fulghumweb/entry/2094_wedding_gifts/

It seems that so often we all get so caught up in the prettily packaged and impractical wedding details and registry gifts that some times we need to sit back and reflect on what we might really need.

[I still really want a shiny new Kitchen-Aid mixer, though.....hmm.]

Thats cute! I was laughing at the plunger...when FH and I first moved in together the very first night he went out and bought a plunger. After 3 moves I finally managed to "forget it" (oh woops) at the last house. The night we moved he dragged me to walmart to buy another one. LOL

Yeah, I was totally laughing at some of these, especially the plunger. The symbolism is great and very true.

That is hilarious! yup need a good plunger and oh yes cheap towels, will come in handy ... believe me I've been in a flood ... and yeah several towels got ruined because they were the expensive ones ... duct tape! haha as long as it is used everything is good and yes a good tool kit ... but I also think everyone should know how to cut the water supply to their house, the electricity to their house, because well things happen ... LOL

Ok...I think this is really funny and cute, but i have to say i get annoyed sometimes with articles like these and the assumptions they make.

    1) i have FULL intention of gettting good use out of my fine china over the next 50 years-you better beleive its not gonna just stay in the box

so he says you get sucked into the bridal registry scam and wonder "what was she thinking?" well...the other alternative is that when she opens 80% of the gifts, she's going what the h*ll were THEY thinking ? Smiley smile

as for the list of things to give them

1)not brown, but weve lived on our own long enought to have a nice, large selection of old bath towels useful for any good cleaning up-what, did we just air dry for the 8 years between living with mom and dad and getting married?

2)plunger-been there, done that. hubbys owned a house for 3 years-already has 2 of these things...I just used one for the 1st time last week

3)well OF COURSE you should own duct tape! please dont tell me I wasnt supposed to have any until i got married!

4)superglue. he may have a point here

    6) uhh...ok 12 yr old. Ill take a few great comedic movies or maybe just some decent nerf guns that we can play with

ok...Im getting bored so Im skipping to 10-we totally had reeses pieces, tic tacs, and chocolates on our registry!

    Very nice!

We are registering for a lot of kitchen stuff, but not fine china, silver, etc., but I did mention to FH that we do have a good proportion of breakable and sharp stuff. I wonder how we'll feel about that if I get preggers right away!

I am ALL about the whoopee cushion!

Bluedaisy, what he's really trying to say is don't get so caught up in the material side of the wedding industry that you forget what the realities of marriage will be. The explanations are symbolic for his perspective on what marriages need..... The plunger recommendation isn't necessarily literal - because sh!t does happen in life and we need to deal with it and not ignore it.

I mean...I really want that Kitchen-Aid mixer, but is it going to help me improve communication with my new husband? Not likely. That's all!

But, a new Kitchen-Aid mixer will help the economy -- they are made in the USA! (Just saw that on GMA yesterday).

Have at least 2 sets of sheets in case one of you gets sick in the night.

Got a blender and a wok 24 years ago -- never have used them!

I LOVE Robert Fulghum!! I've read a few of his books and he is fantastic.

Great article... and my FH knew me well enough that he knew I couldn't wait for the wedding for my KitchenAid... I got one for our first X-Mas together... and we've enjoyed may tasty home-made dinners and deserts as a result. Smiley smile Plus, the quality time of cooking and making things together is always great.... so SOME kitchen stuff doesn't hurt. Smiley winking

Haha - this was funny and to be honest he has a point. I still maintain though that your registry should be for the nice/fun things that you want (and will use) but for whatever reason, you'd rather not have to get yourself. DH and I actually both already have a lot of the everyday stuff we need to 'run a marriage' even though we'll be moving in together for the first time. Have fun with your registry!!! I have loved every single gift that we have received.
