Rant about People being cheap overall (Not Wedding Related)

Amanda, on May 25, 2010 at 9:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

So me and my FH are moving back in with my parents until we buy a house. So I'm selling my ping pong table, Air Hockey, and Foosball. Yes they are older items but people wanna low ball me so much it's stupid. Some lady said the ping pong table was really old and would only give me $10.00. The brand new Paddles and net plus the 30 some ping pong balls I'm selling with it are worth more then $10.00. Makes me so mad it's like if your being that Picky over the damn thing go out an spend the $200.00 it would cost to buy a new table instead of saying my $40.00 is way to high priced.

Just frustrating to have to deal with a Move and planning a wedding. I want to get rid of this stuff but I'm not going to just give it away.

We soooooo need to have a garage sale we have so much stuff. My neighborhood block club plans a neighborhood yard sale every year and I always miss it. This year it's the day we come back from our honeymoon and we really need to get rid of some stuff. We'll probably end up just giving it away just to get rid of it. *sigh*

I know what you mean...are you trying to sell it on Craigslist? I sold a bunch of stuff a few months ago and the first thing was my Wii system which was only like 5 months old and hardly used, which is why I was selling it. With all the games and eveything it was a total investment of like $800 and I was asking $300. It sold right away but I couldn't believe the people offering like $100 and $150. I was getting seriously irritated. Just hold out and you will find someone who will pay more.

Yeha I have the stuff listed on Craigslist. I was going to try and do a Yard Sale but I move out this weekend so my planning was way off and I really don't wanna move the stuff and store it but looks like I might have too. I already have a ton of stuff I'm donating to Goodwill just so I don't have deal with them, but I don't want to doante this stuff.

If you do end up having to donating it, like to to a church youth group or other community organization, I believe they can give you a receipt and you can use it as a tax write-off. I know it's not cash up front, which would be helpful with wedding expenses, but it's money back later on.

I don't blame you. If people are going to low ball you like that you might as well just donate it.

Our condo burned last year and when we tried to claim the loss on our taxes...the accountant couldn't help us. He said, basically, we could only get what you would be able to get at a yard sale for the things. We lost about 20k in furniture and appliances, etc and he said yard sale value is 25% so the most we could get back is 5k eventhough we purchased most of the things 2 months before the condo burned down. With that said....if that's the case...$10 for a ping pong table seems unreasonable since I'm sure you paid more than $40 for it.

Unfortunately, when private parties attempt to sell items, it's all about trying to get something for next to nothing. There are people who pride themselves on doing this! (my former next door neighbor was one of these) Stick to you guns - $40 for a ping pong table and all the equipment sounds like a good deal to me!

I totally understand. I had to sell my PSP which I know is old these days but I was selling that, 2 memory cartriges, the USB-computer cord, 6 games (3 were brand new), clear plastic case/protector & a travel case. The 1st offer I got was $80, so I laughed. I definitely wanted at least $100 which I eventually got. So cheap, the extra $20 went to pay towards gas since I met the person half way.

I HATE HAVING YARD SALES!! people S.U.C.K!!!

dont budge. say take it or leave it. people love to waste time and get everything for nothing. just tell them, look if you dont have the money, move on! they will buy it if they know what its worth, otherwise dont stress and wait to sell it.

Are you sure that lady wasn't my grandmother?? Every yard sale we go to her best offer is a quarter...no matter the price tag. It has gotten to the point where I can't take her anywhere.

I am sorry girl!! FH and I have some stuff to sell I have been dreading it. I am just like DONATE IT!

Geez. I always try to pay what's asked, unless I'm offering to buy a lot of stuff, then I'll make a group offer. I also do a lot of shopping at Goodwill, since the money goes back to helping the community. I was buying baskets and stuff for the wedding there the other day and the girl behind the counter was like "You could get these cheaper at a yard sale!" All I could think about was not wanting to rip people off.

I can understand your frustration. If you don't like what they are offering as far as price goes then I would keep it or donate it and use it as a tax right off. I can think of a lot of worthy after school programs that would love those things for the kids.

Welcome to my world. Although lately, It's been a lot easier, and not as many low-ballers. I've been enjoying it.
