Not your "average" bride...and could use some help

~*World Of Whimsical*~, on November 21, 2012 at 12:43 AM Posted in Planning 0 30

I say that I'm not the "average" bride because...well...I'm not. I don't want a "run of the mill" wedding, and the hardest obstacle for me in the planning process is going to be my dress, because I know in my heart of hearts that I am going to be super picky.

I am having an October wedding with dark colors and a "Gothic" theme. I and my FH are way into the Gothic culture of the Middle Ages, and I want a ceremony that reflects our interests with a semi-modern twist. Tall order to fill, right? You'd think that after all my time in wedding planning, I wouldn't be so darn picky, but I have learned that this is the day for the bride and groom to shine, and whatever wish they want should be fulfilled.

Anyway, I could use some help from brides who are either planning a wedding with a similar theme or have already done a wedding like this. Photos, advice, etc. would be most appreciated, especially if it's dress-related. Thanks in advance!

I officiated a Halloween wedding a couple of years ago. Don't know where the B got her gown, but it was a little bit Gothic style, white with black trim. BMs wore short black dresses, GM wore black slacks and burnt orange shirts. Tablecloths were a deep purple.

There are a couple brides on here that just did Halloween weddings. I think a couple of them had some really beautiful and interesting dresses that might be along the same lines as you were thinking.

You might think renaissance fair, or a fancy bridesmaid dress (maybe) for that color and look you are going for, but not sacrificing quality. Possibly custom make?

Definitely check out the offbeat bride. There's a book, too, which I read cover to cover because it was awesome.

When looking for your gown-talk to the store that you are going into. You might have better luck at boutique style stores. Tell them what you are looking for when you go in. You may even end up choosing something designated as a "bridesmaid" or special occasion dress. Also, if you have a local theater check with them-they sometimes are willing to part with old costumes (we have great seamstresses who do the costumes for local shows) so you still often get good quality-although they are sometimes a little pricy to buy.

Http://www.galleryserpentine.com.au/. They are based out of Australia but I have a corset from them, and it is fantastic and will last a lifetime. I'm having a Halloween wedding, but not so gothic and not blatantly Halloween. Retro Halloween. ANYWAY, feel free to message me and we can bounce ideas off each other if you want. I agree that offbeatbride.com has some great inspiration REAL weddings.

Thanks for your comment, @Celia. I like to think that just because we are very traditional doesn't mean our wedding is boring or any less special than anyone else's Smiley laugh

I agree about Offbeat Brides. Its a totally awesome site. I had a friend who had a total Gothic wedding. Try places that sell Quinceanera dresses. They have tons of gothic looking ball gowns. Also check out places that sell high quality halloween costumes.

I love Offbeat Brides!!! I was inspired by their invitation wording as we didn't want:

"We request the honor of your presence"..like we're loyalty!

Your dress selection is gorgeous and you shouldn't have too many problems finding them. Gothic weddings and brides aren't that "unusual" anymore.

Have you ever looked at Damsel in this Dress clothing? They make top quality corsets that are built to work for all sorts of women, ESPECIALLY curvy women, (the lady who does it, Michelle, is plus size) and they also make the most amazing bustle skirts, pantaloons, bolero jackets everything you can IMAGINE and, since they do it custom sized, I am sure you could request wedding wear. the best part? Her most expensive corset which has pirate sleeves is $300. Most corsets run about $150 and the skirts are low, too, yet it is TOP QUALITY work. A few examples are below. She makes amazing renfaire and steampunk, and I'm sure she could whip up something amazing in the style you're speaking of. Her website is http://damseldress.com

I cannot recommend anyone more highly than I would DITD. I would be using her for my gown if I hadn't decided to do a Old Hollywood merge with geek intead of the fantasy/renaissance wedding I'd been thinking of. You might want to check her out.

Thanks for all of the comments and ideas. I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the "run of the mill" comment. That wasn't my intent.

*inserts foot in mouth and hops away*

Anyway, I will definitely look into the websites. Thank you all so much for the inspiration. I'm having a little trouble getting motivated because I've got around 700 days, but I also know it will pass by before I know it.

@HalloweenBride: I'd love to bounce ideas off of you! Message me and add me. Smiley smile

No offense taken I don't think. It's just some people prefer traditional and others do not but I don't think there's anything wrong with either I will say one thing and this is just my opinion but I have seen brides trying to be "different" and there wedding end up being really tacky and I am not saying this is you at all please understand all I am saying is be careful with how 'different" you try to be some tradition is good because some people won't understand what you are trying to convey with that being said keep in mind it's your day and you have to do what makes you happy and what best reflects you as a couple as long as you follow your heart you can't go wrong.

I just got married on Halloween and our colors were Orange, black and white. And if I would have thought about it I would have had an orange dress. But I did have a different dress. It was a high low. and our cake was orange and black.
