Married ladies, I have a make-up question!

Goodbye, on September 12, 2013 at 1:31 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

Did you do your own make-up on your wedding day? I have been searching for a make-up artist, I already was aware of the fees, but I keep looking at portfolios etc. and its just eating away at me that on average I would have to pay $150 for someone to do my make-up. Anyone have regrets? Share all experiences please! Whether you had someone do your make-up or you DIY.

I have always had horrible experiences with people doing my make-up and found I did a better job myself. I think I am just going to buy some really good make-up and do it myself.

I searched for my MUA, looked at her portfolio, talked with her and checked reviews, then did a trail before booking her. It was one of the best things I'd ever done. She was very reasonable, very good and Bless her heart she even straightened up our suite after we went down for the wedding (it was a mess with all of us getting ready) and wouldn't take a tip!

If you can't afford a MUA, then you could go to the MAC counter at a department store and get made up for free if your wedding timeline allows for that.

ETA pics of my MUA and my ladies all made up

I always pay someone to do mine.. it looks way better than I can do myself. Plus- in photographs - you want the makeup to be a little heavier so it comes through.

Oh I already have my hair appointment booked! I've been going to my stylist for 10 years and she does all my updo's/etc. $150 is just sooo much money, especially since the couple of times I have had it done I was never happy. I was interested in airbrushing though, which I haven't had done yet.

I had a breakdown thanks to hubby's family and my dad, as a gift and to cheer me up, paid for my hair and make-up. Oddly enough, I hated the trial and the lady who did my hair. But on the day of the wedding it was great! Absolutely beautiful (yeah, I didn't care enought to change my MUA and hair ladies hahaha) and the lady I hated bought me coffee! It turned out awesome. Not to mention, I LOVED being pampered and not having to lift a finger. I hate doing my make-up. Bring on the professional. Eh, here's a picture.

I paid for someone to do mine and my girls makeup. Well worth the cost and my makeup lasted all day long through dancing, ceremony outside and eating.

I did my own, and it stayed put just fine. I probably shelled out a little more for quality products than I would have for drugstore makeup, but I'm still using them for everyday stuff now (actually I told DH I want to use this stuff forever now) and it looked fine. All total I think I spent around $60ish on makeup with a 20% off coupon at Ulta, and used Too Faced and Nyx products for the most part (they're cruelty-free and that's like my one granola thing I do keep an eye on).

Also, @Anniebell, it must be a different price range in your area because here I got my hair AND make-up for less than $150. That included the trial.

I am a wedding photographer and a recent bride and saw a whole lot of different things. If your wedding is on a hot summer day, you want a professional who has the right make-up and won't make your face look "shiny" on all of your photos. Avoid anything "glittery" or "shiny". It may look nice in person, but on photos it just looks like you're sweating. Also, I would highly recommend fake lashes-- they make your eyes pop and is really gorgeous. If you know some make-up artists that are good and have dealt with weddings for several times, that's awesome. Make up for weddings vs make-up for other occasions are different. You'll definitely have to do some research and samples.

I did my own. It turned out perfect. I practiced a lot. I googled "wedding makeup," looked at videos, and tried a variety of different techniques. I was super happy with the results and it made the morning less stressful--one less appointment.

I forked out the cash, and it was totally worth it. When I do my own makeup, it never turns out in photos. I might as well not even try. The makeup artist made my eyes look larger than I've ever seen, and I was sooooo happy!

I paid upwards of $175 for airbrushed makeup, and it was some of the best money I've ever spent. If you're like me and tend to be a little self conscious or overly critical of yourself, you NEED to have your makeup doe by a proven professional. I felt so amazingly beautiful on my wedding day, which put me in an amazing mood, which put everyone else in an amazing mood. Pretty much all I've seen from my wedding are non-pro, candid guest photos, but I have yet to see one of myself where I don't like how I look. You can't put a price on that.

I have a friend that's a MK consultant helping me because I don't want to pay for it, but, I'm generally good at doing my makeup anyways so I don't mind. I am getting my hair done though.

I really wanted a MUA to do my makeup. I was worried I'd end up with mascara on my eyelids or something dumb like that due to nerves. I also wanted air brushed foundation and fake eyelashes, which I can't (personally) do myself. I had two horrible trials that I absolutely hated. They were very well reviewed and popular MUAs for my area, but they did not work for me. The eye makeup and contouring was way too heavy and obvious, even in pictures I took. I ended up going to a MAC counter to get tips to do it myself (I paid $50 in products for a makeup trial) and loved the makeup application! It was exactly how I wanted to look. It turned out she did wedding makeup on the side (with airbrushing!) so I hired her. I think she charged $75. (This doesn't count the money wasted at the two earlier trials or the MAC makeup I had to buy (it wasn't a waste to me)). I looked like a better version of myself and my makeup looked great all night!

I had a MUA do airbrush makeup and I am glad that I did. I was a mess that morning and it probably would not have come out right if I did it myself. It lasted until the next morning for the day-after-brunch cruise!
