E-Ring insurance- Did you get it?

Brandy, on June 9, 2010 at 12:50 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 35

Hey there! I'm new to WW, and have been lurking but just getting into posting. I have a question and I hope I'm not prying...

We recently received the appraisal for my e-ring, and it appraised for way more than my FH paid. Like...3 times the amount. I know he got a really good deal on it- but I was SHOCKED at the appraisal. We had planned to put the ring on our home owners insurance, but now with the high appraisal, it's going to increase our insurance payment much higher than we anticipated.

My question is if any/many of you have insured your rings and if it seems worth it. I mean, the ring is still new to me, so if I hit my hand- I look at it immediately to make sure nothing happened to it. But, I'm sure as the newness wears off, I won't always be as careful. But at the same time, is it really worth it to increase our insurance costs that much. Is there a chance the appraisal is off?

I've seen other people talk about ring insurance and it sounds like it's pretty low cost for a specific jewelry item--they just add a rider to the policy and it's some small percentage of the ring's total value per year.

My e-ring was less than $200, so it's not something I've needed to look into personally. But I would definitely encourage it for an expensive piece. You just don't want to take chances with that kind of thing.

YES! I got mine through State Farm and I pay 1% of what the ring costs (from the appraisal) and NO deductible, NO questions asked if something happens to it. I'm taking it with me to Punta Cana in 2 weeks, because if something happens, it can be replaced. Homeowners insurance usually covers it, but then there's a deductible. So this just works out better, IMO.

But wait... you didn't get it insured through your jeweler? I just read the part about home owners insurance. Hmm... I don't know then. I'm just a huge believer in better safe than sorry.

For sure you need to get it lol. Appraisals are accurate, the appraiser is trained to look at stones just as doctors, lawyers, etc. YOU NEED TO GET THE INSURANCE! Heaven forbid something was to ever happen, and you lose it or damage it horrible you would need the insurance money to buy you a new ring.

We got mine on his insurance. The store guarantees lost diamonds...but not total loss. And FH spent a pretty penny on it....so to cheap out on not getting insurance for thing is like gong without car insurance......I would get a second opinion on the appraisal and insurance quote.....

We insured mine through jewerly mutual, it came recommended by bluenile.com. The appraisal came much higher, like 2x higher than what he paid for it, so it was very important that it's insured. And it is insured for any damage, or total loss from what I understand. Fiance took care of all that before he proposed.

I would highly recommend that piece of mind.

We paid the $100 for the warranty at the jewelry store, too, which covers sizing and such. One of my friends lost her stone, and they replaced it under the warranty, but the wording in the warranty says that they don't *have to* so I didn't want to take any chances.

@Tee-thanks! I was talking to my MOH the other day, and we're like, "Wow...it's so close! It just doesn't feel real!"

Yes! We added it onto our homeowner's policy- and depending on your appraiser, it should be accurate (but they can very slightly) mine was alraedy GIA certified, so we knew it was good to go. FH would not let me out of the house without this thing insured, because you never know.

I have insurance and a guarantee on my ring so that if I ever loose any of the stones out of it, I can send it to them and they will replace the stones for free!

I would feel so bad if he spends all this money on something and then I loose a stone or something.

    PS, welcome to the boards!

DH told me that he doesn't ever care if I lose any jewelry but he's not spending thousands again to replace it. LOL.

We got my ring insured but the insurance company told us NOT to put it on our apartment insurance or homeowner's. He said to open a policy just for the ring. If you add it to homeowner's the ring is only covered if something happens to it in the home. If you are on vacation or somewhere outside the home the policy won't cover the ring.

Like Michelle said, check with your agent because policies and companies differ.
