cake vendor problem

Ana, on January 7, 2012 at 10:11 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hey everyone!

I started a new job right before Thanksgiving, and it has really cut into my WW time. It's been a while since I have been on, but I need some thoughts/opinions.

My cake and dessert bar vendor just called me to tell me that she is shutting down her business to go back to school. She offered me 2 alternatives: 1)she would return my deposit and I would find another vendor; or 2)she would take the month of June off school to fulfill contracts (she also has 2 other weddings booked in June).

My initial thoughts:

1. It was a huge hassle with my reception venue to get approval for the dessert bar, so I really don't want to have to cancel that.

2. I am worried about the good vendors being booked already, as my timeline said that June weddings should book cake vendors in November.

3. But what if she is stressed with school or too busy and my cake/dessert bar suffers for that?

Is there something else I should consider when making my decision? What would you all do?

I had a similar problem except we hadn't put deposit down yet and the day we went to go pay the "store" was just gone... I still don't have a cake vendor and my wedding is 2 months before yours but, I have been working on this recently and have found all the vendors I call still have plenty available time. We are going to our local bridal expo in two weekends and plan to book there. Good luck and keep us posted!

Honestly if you already have been approved to have a dessert bar. You dont have to cancel it. Find another vendor. It sounds like she has a good intention but you just never know and I dont want someone canceling last minute. You still have time to find a vendor

I think finding another one is a good idea. But I would see if you can book another vendor before getting your deposit back from cake lady #1. My entire engagement was 5.5 months and I had no trouble finding a cake vendor - I actually had several to choose from. I know every vendor is different, but my cake vendor said she usually doesn't completely book up a specific date until 2-3 months prior.

    Good luck!

I would try to find a different vendor. My wedding is a few weeks before yours and we still haven't put down a deposit for our cake (we're doing that tomorrow), but I haven't had any issues with finding vendors that are still available for that day. I would definitely be concerned that your cake/dessert bar might suffer since she is no longer in the business and it sounds like she may have a lot of other stuff going on. Maybe try calling a few other vendors to get a feel for how much availability they still have for your date before officially canceling with your original vendor.

I would go with someone else. I know when I was in school I was to stressed to think about anything else and any time off I had I just wanted to be with family and rest.

Life happens, and I think she is trying to do the best thing for you. I'd look for someone else; you still have time. If she is going to stop doing this for several months, her enthusiasm may not be what it should be, and that is totally understandable.

I love Cupid Cupcakery- pretty and DELICIOUS! Google her.. she will come-up... As you can imagine, I have sampled more than one or two cake/cupcakes....and I always remember her.
