Different photographer for engagement & wedding day pictures?

I was in a similar situation as you with our wedding being 4 hours from where I wanted our engagement pictures. I did end up finding a photographer that was willing to travel with no fee. I do agree it is a great time to get to know your photographer, but if I hadn't found one willing to do the traveling, I would have hired two because I really wanted engagement pictures. I guess I would say think about how much you want an engagement session, and if you still want one with a different photog, I say go for it.

I have a different photographer for my wedding day than I did for engagement photos. I know both photographers are very reputable, so it made it easy to go with two.

Totally understand wanting to establish a connection beforehand, but I think you'd be fine as long as you know the day of photographer is good too. Then maybe try a local Boston photographer for engagement photos. If they happen to not turn out the way you wanted, it's not as painful as day of photos going wrong!

I used two different photographers but my circumstances were different. I just wanted a few engagement shots so I could put one on our save the date. A friend offered to do it as a gift and it was very casual. I then hired our wedding photographer who had an engagement session included in his package. Since we already got it done, he just added more hours to the wedding day coverage. I have yet to meet the photographer in person since we live six hours away from the wedding venue. We are supposed to meet one month before the wedding. If I can't make the drive, we will just Skype again. I'm very confident in my photographer based on his portfolio and our communication so far, even if we don't meet until the wedding.

We have two different photographers. Our engagement session is a gift from FH's sister who is a photographer. We hired an awesome photographer for our wedding because she will be in the wedding and not available. I don't foresee it being an issue. I'm going to do a boudoir session with our wedding photographer so I guess that might help me 'get to know her' but I fell like if your photographer is a professions and experienced with weddings, you don't need extra time to get comfortable.

Have you considered a Boston photographer who might be willing to photograph your wedding in Connecticut? That might enable you to get to know the photographer better before the wedding.

If not, and if you still want an engagement session (some people want them only to get to know the wedding photographer and assess his or her skill), having two is fine.

My photography company has a whole slew of amazing photographers, but only 3 do engagement shoots. The one we chose to work with happened to be one of the photographers that does not to engagement shoots. I was disappointed and apprehensive at first; especially since we didn't really have a say in the photographer we ended up with for our engagement shoot. In the end, she was spectacular! She made us feel so comfortable and she got some amazing photos. I'm thrilled. While I would have liked to have worked with my wedding day photographer for the engagement shoot, I know the company is very reputable and wouldn't stick me with a terrible photographer. I don't regret having to go with another photographer at all.

Yeah that's totally normal to have two different photographers! Wedding photographers know how to make you feel comfortable as well. I wouldn't worry so much about not being able to get to know them sooner. Usually photographers like to set up meetings prior as well, or talk on the phone about how you'd like things to go. So you will get to be comfortable with them despite them not shooting your engagement.

Our package did not come up engagement photos, so I actually had my dad take them as he's a decent photographer. I love how they came out! For the wedding we have a professional taking all the photos. We've seen tons of samples of his work that we are pretty confident we will like the pictures. I'm from Boston originally and it seems like you would be able to find someone willing to travel that distance. I guess it depends on which side of CT you are getting married in though. If you have to go with two different people I don't think it's the end of the world.

Yeah, we had a friend do our engagement photos for free, instead of our photographer who would have charged a couple hundred. They turned out fine.

I didn't really care about the engagement photos. We just did a session because we wanted a chance to work with our photographer. I don't think we would have hired someone different. But I guess it is about what you want out of the shoot. Our reason to do it was to get a chance working with our photographer, not for the pictures. If you care more about the pictures and location two photographers could work. But maybe you could still do a mini session in CT with the CT photographer.

Yes we live in Colorado but got married in Virginia. I did a ton of research on both companies we hired and it came out fine. Our engagement picture photography was great to work with in Colorado. We also had the photographer in Virginia send lots of samples of his work and we read lots of reviews. Once we met with him in person we knew he was a good match for us. You will have a few phone calls with your out of town photographer I think that will ease your mind.

We have 3 different photographers!!! Haha - we are having a photog in the Virgin Islands (who lives there) for our wedding ceremony. We had our e-pics done by another photog and then he was booked for our reception date at home, so I found yet another photog for the reception. Her package actually comes with a mini engagement shoot so we are going to get pics done again (yay!) to get to know her a little better.

I think that as long as you are at least able to meet your photographer in person or video chat with them you would be able to get a good sense of who they are (refering the the one in CT). many photographers are willing to travel but they may charge you a travel fee. i know that mine does for weddings but she is great!
