Did you tip your tailor/alterations person?

A. L., on June 1, 2017 at 12:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

The lady who has been doing my dress alterations has been amazing. She offered me three fittings, has made sure that my dress is going to fit exactly right on my wedding day, and is even holding my dress until just before the wedding so it doesn't have to around in our small apartment.

What would be an appropriate tip? 15%? 20%?

There was a post about this a few weeks ago that made me decide not to. Someone said it was really awkward when they tried to tip because the lady refused it. Depending what my total comes to I might round up to the next $50 or something because she's been amazing, but they cover their costs in the price so it's not needed

Thanks. I already paid for the alterations, so I'm wondering if I can tip when I pick up the dress.

Same as other service providers, definitely yes if they are employees, optional if they own their business. The lady who refused may have been the owner.

I didn't. I wasn't sure, so I asked my step-mom and MoH. They both said not to.

MMMmmmm I would've since she was so sweet, but that mandatory $700 alterations fee should cover it.

The first seamstress did nothing but mess up my dress - so, no.

The second seamstress who fixed the mistakes of seamstress #1 was AMAZING! and she charged me only $50.00 to d it. Since I've known her for years, I sent her favorite Edible Arrangement along with a very heartfelt thank you note.

I would say no tip. However, be sure to give her a great recommendation on as many wedding and review sites as she is on.
