Did you have your bridesmaids pay for their own dresses or did you pay for them all?

Did you have your bridesmaids pay for their own dresses or did you pay for them all? We will have 5-10 bridesmaids (depending on our venue space) but we’re leaning towards having them pay. After all- they’ll wear it for that one day & if they want to wear it elsewhere, they can etc.

Each bridesmaid will get the opportunity to choose the design they want (same colors of course) & my maid of honor will be in a different color. She’ll choose her design as well.
Feedback, ideas & pros & cons please!

My bridesmaids paid for their dresses. I specified a color and length, and they picked out their own dresses. Each one has a different style.

Yeah, I think it’ll be better that way. How did you go about informing them? & did any of them have questions or issues?

I asked them their budget for dresses, and made sure that we ordered dresses from somewhere within everyone's budget. No one had any issues. They ended up ordering their dresses from Azazie.

Our bridesmaids paid for their own dresses. While it would be great if you could afford to pay for them, that's definitely not the norm.

While it would be very generous for you to do so, it is outside the norm to pay for their dresses. I would do as suggested, ask for their budget, their preferences in dress styles and go from there.

My bridesmaids paid for the dress. It was 50 bucks off Amazon and since we were only having 2 it didn't matter if they matched or not. The hardest part was finding the color that we wanted since FH didn't want plum.

My bridesmaids paid for their dresses, and that has been my experience as a bridesmaid as well. While it would be super generous of you, the financial obligation for the dress is pretty well known when accepting the role of bridesmaid. Since you are allowing them to choose their own dress, you also don't need to discuss budget since they already have that freedom.

I asked each girl individually about their budget then proceeded from there. Since you are allowing them to pick their own style then I would tell them where you want them to get them, what color, fabric and length and let them pick from there. Some dresses will look different even if they are the same color if they are different fabrics which is why I suggestion picking one type of fabric for all dresses. Azazie has a ton of options.

I have a much smaller bridal party- 2 women & 1 man. I am letting them choose what they will wear, and I will be paying for their attire. I did this for two reasons.
    1) I have been in nearly 20 weddings, and realize the financial burden of having to purchase a dress that I usually don’t especially love and would never wear again. So it was very important for me to budget in the cost of the wedding party’s attire.
    2) We are having a destination wedding, so our guests are already having to pay for travel expenses. I definitely did not want to add any further expenses for them, and wanted to make sure we really treated them as a thank you for making the trip (ie, paying for their attire, leaving welcome bags and bottles of champagne in their rooms, getting them lavish gifts, and paying for a nice romantic dinner for them one of the nights they are there). That being said, I don’t think paying for the wedding party’s attire is considered “the norm”. So, where I am sure your bridesmaids would graciously accept you paying for the dresses, I doubt they are expecting it. If you are letting them choose their dresses from wherever they’d like, they can set a budget they are comfortable with on their own. If you are requiring them to purchase the dresses from a particular store, I would definitely ask them what they would feel comfortable spending on a dress, and choose places that can accommodate their budgets.

Our bridesmaids paid for their own dresses. I told them the color and the place to purchase from (Azazie), and we let them pick the dress they wanted. This ensured they were comfortable with the price & the style.

I think most bridesmaids expect to pay for their dress. My girls all did. I made sure to find dresses under $50 because two of my bridesmaids were having money issues.

Hello, we paid for our bridesmaids and groomsmen for their dresses and suits because we ended up saving a lot of money on the venue/food/etc due to downsizing our wedding. I'm also paying for hair/makeup for the bridesmaids and our mothers, but they will be providing the tip to their hair/makeup artist. For the bridesmaids, I let them pick their own dress based on the color I assigned them and had them send me a screenshot of the receipt so that I could reimburse them on Venmo.

I think that most bridesmaids expect to pay for their own dresses these days. My girls paid for their own dresses: I chose the designer, color, and fabric and allowed them to select the style of dress. I asked them to wear any silver shoe they wanted (half wore shoes they already owned, and half bought new shoes for the occasion). I did pay for their hair and makeup though.

My bridesmaids have already paid and ordered their dresses for my wedding. (May 2021) They were $99 and each girl got to choose the style they wanted. Some (most) opted to pay for their own hair and makeup. However, i purchased pjs, robes, slippers and mimosa glasses for the morning of. I plan to also buy their jewelry once I can find something I like!

That’s awesome! Do you or anyone on this convo know a reputable place for plus size bridesmaid dresses? All of my girls are curvy ranging from 14-22.

I ordered from Birdy grey and some dresses go up to 3XL. The biggest size that someone ordered in my bridal party was an XL and most of the girls said they’re true to size. Azazie is extremely size inclusive which i love. I think they go up to a 30 and they have so many options!
