Did I miss the memo about white at wedding?

tiarra , on August 27, 2017 at 9:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 67

I have been to 4 weddings this summer and at each and every one I saw at least one guest sometimes more wearing white dresses. Is it no longer a wedding no no for people to wear white to the wedding? I would NEVER wear white to someone's wedding but I'm getting married in the fall and wanted to know if this is something I should expect lol. Either way there i don't care if a guest shows up in a white dress but for my own sanity I just want to know how everyone feels about this?

Many people seem to have been away every day that etiquette was taught by anybody.

Many people somehow haven't heard not to wear white to a wedding. It sounds weird sometimes considering some people won't even wear pastel colors to another person's wedding. It wouldn't really annoy me if somebody wore white to my wedding as much as confuse me, though.

I'm old fashion I guess and I think it's tacky. I also don't like seeing black (all black), unless it's part of the "theme". People don't really think about it anymore though.

This rule went out with the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule. It's no longer a thing and it's silly to care, IMO.

I think white (and black) are tacky at weddings for guests, but have heard from several people that this rule is no longer practiced or believed...

Huh, I didn't know that black was considered tacky by some! I never wear all black because I love color but wouldn't think twice if someone else did.

Definitely on team no white though by a guest!

A guest wire white to my wedding, I didn't care one bit because so many other things were going on and I guarantee no one mistook her for the bride. One guest wore a Hawaiian shirt too. Again, it had no affect on my day whatsoever. Don't let it bother you

This rule did not go out with the "no white after labor day" rule.

The danger of asking etiquette questions online is that people answer from their own personal bias with no etiquette knowledge or authority whatsoever.

Love #teamnowhite I literally lol. Obviously at the end of the day it doesn't matter what guests wear as long as you show up and eat and drink all the stuff my FH and I have purchased lol. I'd be a lot angrier by a no show then someone in white lol

I could care less if a guest shows up to my wedding wearing white, ivory, off white, etc. UNLESS it was a wedding dress. That's soley for sure my role.

So the Emily Post Institute is wrong and you're right, Muriel?

I as a guest would never dream of wearing white to another brides wedding!

I think it's tacky. It's not a huge deal though. It's not like someone in an all white sundress will be mistaken for the bride. I would personally, never wear an all white or ivory or even super light, almost white dress to a wedding.

ETA: Open the discussion up to vendors. They often have the best insight.

@shannon @elizabeth I'm like Wow did not know that about the white dress but it is cool to know and makes me feel better about it. I'm very analytical so I am always over thinking everything lol

I wouldn't be mad if someone wore white to my wedding but I would never do that to another bride. I was raised that it is tacky and rude. It's a special day for the couple and only they should have the option wear white.

I never even heard of this until I came here.

I see several people in white at every wedding I do, and no one would ever be mistaken for the bride...

I guess this is one of those situational etiquette things...

I had someone wear a white blouse and a white skirt at our at-home reception. I'm pretty sure no one confused him with a bride, though. The beard gave it away.
