Did anyone feel uncomfortable trying on wedding dresses?

Jen, on January 30, 2012 at 4:44 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I went this weekend with my mother to try on wedding dresses. I felt totally uncomfortable walking out to look at myself in the big mirror in front of a room full of strangers. I told the sales person they should have mirrors in the dressing rooms also. She said usually brides like to walk out to a room full of "Oos and Awes." I on the other hand felt totally uncomfortable in front of all the other brides and the entourage of people they brought with them. Did anyone else feel this way or am I just being weird about it? I plan on going to another salon with my mom next weekend, but am kinda actually dreading the experience.

I tried on dresses when we first got engaged (almost a year ago) and I did feel a little uncomfortable, but I think it has more to do that I was about 40 pounds heavier than I am now and felt HUGE! I am a big diva deep down and love attention so I know it wasn't that. You should feel proud that you are getting married and that you have every right to have people ooh and aah at you when you walk out in a dress!! Smiley winking I know that is easier said and done for someone who isn't as much of a diva as me, but try to enjoy yourself!

Thank heavens, I missed that bit! The only place I tried on a wedding dress was a small consignment store where it was just the two of us and the owner there.

Yeah, I didn't love being "dressed" by a stranger, lol. However, I did go shopping for a dress when NO ONE else was (black Friday..woohoo). So it was just me, mom and our nice consultant. =)

Yea a little, only cause you're basically HOLDING your dress up, you in undergarments and some women brought GUYS with them... i was like HELLO... changing bride here, yea we had a changing room, but to get zipped i had to open the door and have the lady help me. AWKWARD when men are standing there.... but don't stress it... ask the lasy if there is more of a private area for you to change.... just tell her you feel awkward, a GOOD consultant should be able to make you comfortable!

Thanks for the support and advice ladies. I am definitely going to try to enjoy it next time and hopefully there will be a more private area at the next salon.

I would be uncomfortable in a big public area as well. I only went to a small boutique so we had the place to ourselves. It was really fun!

Nope. But I am a dress girl, and my friends and I will even share dressing rooms when we go shopping, or if we have separate ones and need help the other one will zip us up much the same as the consultant did when I tried on dresses.

Everyone has different comfort levels, so it's normal to feel weird if you aren't used to other people in those sorts of situations. They usually have more private dressing rooms, or the BM dressing rooms are a little off to the side usually. Don't be afraid to request one of those.

I'm with Pan X. I could have stayed there all day and tried on every dress if they would have let me!

I was uncomfortable too. Shopping is not my thing. The worse part is, I tried on this dress and everyone (even random people) were like "omg. that's the one!" and I didn't feel that way at all. It was very flattering, but not me. I ended up getting a different dress. Glad I didn't get the one everyone liked, because I've seen it in SO many wedding shows and one of my best friends had the exact same dress for her wedding and she looked way better in it!

I just went dress shopping this weekend, I felt sick and nervous right before my 1st appointment. I know a lot of it had to do w/my insecurities about my weight and body. But after trying on a few dresses i felt a lil better.

Totally normal and common to feel that way! It does get easier so thats good! ALso, try to just focus on the person or people you came with and ignore the fact that other people are there - you wont care what they think anyway and you'l never see them again :-)

The shop that I actually purchased my dress from made me pretty uncomfortable when I first got there. There were 4 other (maximum amount allowed) girls trying on dresses with their friends and family. They had a big room so you had to walk out for everyone to see. I felt reallly uncomfortable because I was the biggest girl there trying on dresses. I kid you not, the other 4 girls had to have been a size 2, 4, or 6...Im a 12! I have curves and boobs and stuff that these other girls dont have! It did make me insecure...until I found the dress Smiley smile I didnt care anymore once I put that dress on. I completely understand where you are coming from.

I felt uncomfortable but for different reasons. At first I felt weird having to come out of the dressing room in my undergarments but I got over that. The real akwardness was my family. My mom and sister came with me to my appointment and neither of them bothered to sit down and wait for me to come out and show them dresses. My mom was wandering around looking for more dresses for me to try and my sister was on the phone dealing with baby daddy drama. (he wasn't happy with the fact that she was doing something fun). So each time I came out of the dressing room with a dress on, I had to stand around waiting for them to make their way back to me to see me in each dress I tried on. Ugh, but that's my family!

I felt that way at Alfred Angelo. The first place I went had individual "show" me rooms for your family and friends, and then to go to AA, and see a huge room with lots of strangers, whose eyes are on you the minute you step out. As a plus size woman in the midst of a lot of skinny minnies...it was an uncomfortable feeling. Luckily with them, they had all the sizes, so it wasn't like the back of the dresses were gaping open or anything.

I felt uncomfortable at times, Like I would come out and the bride using the room next to me her entourage kept commenting on my dresses. I am small and so its not like I was upset that they were calling me fat or anything, but they were like "oh thats not her it just doesn't look like her" um you don't know me! and my favorite was I tried on the dress the bride they were with just took off and they were like "wow shes like swallowed by the dress, at least *insert their friends name* filled the dress out...

I mean keep your comments to yourself!

At first. I t was odd having my mom in there with me and help me with the bra and slip. It was odd coming out to show everyone. I got over it at the first dress. The consultant was very nice and helpful. We talked while putting on and taking of dresses.
