I would get your marriage certificate in NY. You might need to get it signed in NY too, I don't know what the legalities are for DR weddings vs US ones!

You get the marriage certificate where you get married. Different countries have different rules though so the majority of people that have destination weddings do a legal wedding in the US where they live first.

You get the marriage certificate where you get married. You need to look into it. We wanted to do this but some countries require applications, hundreds of dollars, some required you to be in the country for a certain amount of time prior to the event and it is at their discretion to approve or not. I’m also not sure if it would be considered a legal marriage in the US. I would definitely do your research.

First off, marriage certificate and marriage license are different. In the US, you get the marriage license before the wedding, and it gives you permission to get married. The marriage certificate is issued after the wedding, and it certifies that you are already married.

You have to follow the laws of the place where you are getting legally married. Some couples will have a brief courthouse ceremony before they leave, and then have a ceremony that doesn't have legal effect once they get there. That way, they don't have to figure out all the marriage laws of a foreign country. Also, it means that the marriage certificate will be in English, can be ordered more easily if you ever need a copy, etc. If you do that, you get the license in New York. Other couples will research the laws of the country in which they are getting married, and comply with them. In that case, you'd have to check the laws of the Dominican Republic, and comply with them.
