Destination Wedding Tipping

Cait, on October 23, 2017 at 3:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Hi, everyone - For other WW-ers that have held weddings in foreign countries without a culture of tipping, how did you handle? Many thanks in advance!

What has your circle done before? Do they normally tip?

@Keisha - It's kind of a personal question. Don't really feel comfortable talking about finances and money like that with friends and family.

A generic question such as how did you handle the tip situation in this context, would be understandable. Its not like you are asking how much they tipped.

Just tip what you would tip here?

If it's a country that normally does have you tip, usually the gratuity is included in the bill somewhere. Depending on the country, tipping outside of this can be seen as insulting.

Also, Keisha wasn't asking about dollar amounts, she was asking about what your circle's etiquette was when they travel. You have to notice.

@Keisha - Okay? I'm telling you I don't feel comfortable asking the question, which is why I came here.

I know your brother recently had a very DIY wedding. Is it DH family who usually has these over seas affairs?

    Any country in particular, perhaps someone here has been there and will have an idea. Everywhere is different;

@Cait maybe tipping is not the norm in France, but if you are asking a venue to provide the level of attention and service your guests will require maybe tipping is the norm. I have no clue cause I have never flown 15 people to France for a weekend getaway at a private chateau. Do you tip the flight attendants? I dunno. Do you tip the travel agent. I dunno. Do you tip the transportation to the venue and various activities. I dunno. Do you tip the maître d' and/or butler. I dunno.

Maybe talk to your parents on what they think is appropriate.

Are you asking whether you would tip your H/MUA or catering staff or whatever?

TBH, I would assume I would be tipping for any service I would normally tip for, and if it is turned down by the recipient it won't be any issue for you, you'll just have more money to go home with.

Or can you check with your venue about whether gratuity is included with anything or what the standard gratuity is? That might help shed some light!

France, tip the staff at the venue. Check if is included or not in your bill first. I would also tip Makeup artist and hairdressers.

Do you have a planner that is assisting with all the moving parts like travel, accommodations etc? Has he or she ever done a wedding like yours? Will they be able to help? Or even you can ask your friends for their planner and see if they can assist you with this question. This way you do not have to ask anyone their business

What do your parents do? My father’s philosophy was to always tip the person in charge and anyone who went above and beyond when we travelled abroad.

Many European countries do appreciate tipping, though on a smaller scale than the US. I would tip 10-15%, depending on the execution.

For most European countries you only tip for exceptional service but it does vary by country
