Destination wedding save the dates &invites

Bride2Be, on November 27, 2020 at 4:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 22
Looking for advice from those who had a destination or out of state wedding. When did y’all send save the dates and invites/rsvps? Do you wish you sent them earlier or later? Our venue is on Mackinac island, Michigan and guests will have to stay on the island at our venue or rent a room at the condos next door. No cars are allowed on the island so it’s just horse drawn buggys to get around and you have to take a ferry to get to the island. So people will either drive or fly up from Texas (my family and where we live) or drive in from Michigan (his family). There is a limited number of rooms so we will urge people to book their accommodations early to make sure they get a room close by!

We plan on traveling up in July 2021 to see the venue and officially book the date a year out (August 2022) and I’d like to get save the dates out ASAP so people can start making arrangements if they want to. It’ll be about 12 months out for the save the dates. Is that too early? Or good for a destination type wedding?
And then about how many months in advance should we send the invitations and make the rsvps due? It’s looking like the final head counts and monies due will be about a month in advance so we will need the rsvps by then. I know we should avoid the holidays so sending them at least in January 2022 or later would be 8 months in advance.
Any recommendations or advice? Thank you!!

I think around a year in advance is perfect for Save The Dates!

12 months is good timing to send save the dates, I personally would also add the wedding website then as well so people can follow along with suggestions for accommodations. Because some people may get the save the dates and not know that they need to make plans. Smiley smile

    Sounds like it’ll be beautiful!

Send out save the dates when you finalize the guest list 10 months out. Send invites at the standard 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

Awesome good to know! I definitely plan on having the wedding website up and running and included on the save the dates so hopefully they will get a head start on making reservations! My FH thinks it’s a good idea to also have the rsvp feature turned on on the website so people can decline early if they know they couldn’t make it. Idk how accurate it will be since it’ll be so early out.

6-8 weeks doesn’t seem like enough time for invites and rsvps. Shouldn’t people have more time to figure out plans?

I think it’ll help to know, but what if someone says no, but changes their mind, I think respectfully of people are unable to make it they would personally let you know.

You have the right plan, everything will be perfect.

Honestly, since your family is coming from Texas, I think you should send them out a year in advance. If people need to save or plan vacation days, people will probably have to plan for it.

Our families lived in PA, and we had our wedding in Delaware. But we only sent them like 2 months before the wedding because it's drivable. And also we got engaged and married within 6 months, so there was not "advanced" planning.

I agree here. I am letting people know about 3.5 months early about 12 weeks.

Especially now, during COVID. You too would like to know so you can plan accordingly for an accurate headcount.

They can start figuring out plans with the I formation from the save the dates. I think the soonest I’d sent them is 10 weeks early. That gives them 5 weeks to respond, and a week for you to track down any stragglers before your numbers are due.

I agree! How far in advance would you recommend for sending the invitations and how long should we give people to rsvp?

12 weeks sounds like a better amount of time. How long would you give people to rsvp by? Since we are paying for the wedding ourselves, the final head count will make a big difference in how much $$ we will need to for sure have by a month before the wedding. Even tho the final numbers are due a month before, I’m thinking about making the rsvps due way earlier than that but not sure how soon is too soon?

That's what save the dates do is give them time to plan and figure out if they can attend or not. Replies are generally due back at 4 weeks with a week cushion for you to track down who forgot to reply. That is the standard timeline that has been around for centuries with no issues.

Another option: if you plan to have a website is to have online rsvps or let them call/text you as soon as they are received. Rsvpify.com lets you add the feature to your website and can be a quick and easy method for the tech savvy guests.

That’s what I’m afraid of is a lot of people saying yes/no and then changing their mind later on!

Ooo I’ll have to check out that website! I think the knot has one but I haven’t checked how early it can be turned on.

So our wedding is on July 5. Sending out the invites the first week in March (they should have received it by mid March) and giving them until April 31st.

Essentially I’ll have the final headcount two months before the wedding. We need to pay about $75 a person for each person over 100 guests so it’s important that we can plan accordingly.
    Nothing is wrong with that.

This is great perspective thank you! I definitely would feel more comfortable knowing the final head count way before the wedding so we know how many to plan for budget wise. I guess people would understand needing to know well in advance! Hopefully!

They’ll have to understand, and honestly if they have to travel, people should know well before two months if they are coming.

I completely agree! The one and only destination wedding I’ve attended so far I knew as soon as I was invited I was going to do everything in my power to make it happen! It was in Italy and man I had to pinch every penny to go but boy was it worth it!!
