Destination Wedding: Cancun

LikeBerry, on March 23, 2017 at 12:22 PM Posted in Planning 1 15

Hello, I am new here! We're recently engaged and starting to plan our wedding for (ideally) February 2018. We want a destination wedding in Mexico, and to keep it appropriately priced for our guests, we were thinking Cancun or the surrounding area. Anyone with destination wedding experience or a suggestion of hotel? So far, we have looked at the Hard Rock and the Iberostar, and both have a lot of options. Just looking for input from anyone and everyone. Thanks!

I'm having a DW in Cancun!!! The Hard Rock Riviera Maya is amazing for weddings but I decided on Hyatt Ziva. Dreams Riviera is also popular for weddings! Beware the planners out there work slowly "island time" but I definitely don't regret going this route.

I'm having a DW and although I appreciate you want to keep it affordable for your guests, it will always be more money than a local wedding.

Also, Mexico has Zika so your guests may not want to travel there so just keep that in mind with your planning and don't get upset if close loved ones say they can't come.

Try calling up the places and getting the full details of cost. Good luck!

Look for a destination wedding specialist who is local. they will get you to the right people and help facilitate speaking with the resorts. im doing my in the hard rock in the dominican. so far it has been so easy. too excited!

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I do recognize that a DW is more $$ for everyone than a local wedding, but we're having a very small guest list, and they are all on board to take their winter vacation with us next year. (We're from New England, and everyone is always itching to get away by February.)

I will definitely plan to leave extra time for everything. I'm hoping that I, too, can be on "island time" during the wedding planning, so maybe their vibe will keep me zen!

Getting married at the Iberostar Cancun in August! I am so excited! We checked out the HardRock as well, but found it to be out of price range for many guests. It looks like such an awesome place though! I'd suggest talking to a travel agent who can give you some insight on resorts. Pick a handful of places you're interested in and research their wedding packages to see what one caters to you and your wedding the best. That is ultimately how we decided on Iberostar. Good luck and happy planning! Smiley smile

We're honeymooning at Hyatt Zilara in Cancun. I saw a post on their instagram page of set up for a wedding and it was absolutely gorgeous!

I'm planning a DW in Cabo. I'd recommend looking for a travel agent to arrange a group room rate for your wedding. It won't cost you anything and they often have special deals with certain hotels to get you a great rate. I hired my travel agent (Carey at Beach Bum Vacations, highly recommend) after picking the resort, but they can be helpful beforehand as they tend to be familiar with the different wedding packages each resort offers.

FH and I are having a DW in JA. The best thing we did was to find a travel agency who deals well with groups. It made the organization of accommodations much less stressful and crazy because everyone's point person was the agent, rather than me or FH. Also, research wedding packages. FH & I went with the RIU Montego Bay because so much was included in the package. Good luck!

@Shannon How has your experience been with the Ibrostar? That's my FH's fav.

@CaboBride2018 Thanks for the Beach Bum Vacation suggestion! We'll check them out!

@LikeBerry so far its been pretty good. I've been warned that DW wedding co-ordinators definitely work on "island time" aka it does take a while for them to get back to you with information. As the date draws closer they become more and more responsive and I've heard from several people who have done DW (one of them being Iberostar Cancun) that 2-3 months out is when you'll be going back and forth practically every day and they become much more responsive. It can be frustrating at times waiting a week or two for an answer to a question but I definitely understand that they are doing multiple weddings every single day and my wedding is not even on their radar at this time. Overall great experience so far, you'll just have to embrace being a very laid back bride, lol!
