Destination Wedding Advice (dress)

JANELLE, on August 20, 2019 at 9:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Has anyone done a destination wedding or have advice?? I am getting married in Hawaii 5/23/2020. How did you travel with your dress? Also, we are doing the wedding reception at a separate venue (20 mins away more in town on the Big Island) from where we are getting married, should I wear my wedding dress or change before the reception??

I would call the airline you plan on flying and see how they typically handle wedding dresses. Some require them to be your carry on, others say to check it. It's all dependent on the airline. I plan on shipping mine to my FMIL's house, but that's only from KC to Florida. I'm not sure if I would recommend the same going to Hawaii. I would also just wear your wedding dress between the ceremony and reception unless you had planned on a separate reception outfit all together!

    Hey there Janelle Smiley smile

    Welcome to the WeddingWire community!

Hawaii is such a beautiful destination for a wedding! Have you and your FS been before?

As Jill advised, I would also recommend you reach out to the airline and ask how they typically handle wedding dresses. The airlines baggage policy may specify where you need to store it and it could vary from airline to airline.

Do you have a different dress for the reception you plan to change in to at some point? If so, I think this is based on your personal preference. If it was me, I would want to wear my wedding dress for the beginning of my reception for more photos, first dance, etc. and then change once it’s time for dancing Smiley smile

Ahh I didn't even think of calling the airline that's a good idea! I am making my own wedding cake (I'm a pastry chef) and I'm checking that as baggage Smiley tongue so I will def have to see if I have to pay to check that as baggage as well! I haven't picked a reception outfit but I guess I could always bring one and then I can see how I feel before leaving the reception and if I want to change.

Hello there, thank you for the welcome! I haven't been to Hawaii before but my FS has, and loved it (he was on a diff part of the island tho). We have traveled a lot but never made it to Hawaii so we figured this is a good excuse Smiley tongue. I hadn't decided about having another dress bc I figured I probably wouldn't want to take it off lol but maybe I should have one just in case I feel like changing
