Destination Wedding 2021 concerns

Amber, on May 3, 2020 at 9:48 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 8
Hi everyone. I feel like I'm being a little premature about this, but I have had to field so many wedding guests questions about this topic.

I have had a 3 year engagement to plan and finance, my dream destination wedding in Europe. We had a date in April of 2021.
With COVID we have postponed any planning and putting deposits.
Basically everyone is asking if we canceled or are moving the date further back.
I'm really hoping it will be safe to travel then, and people can come if they feel comfortable. As long as my fiance and I are there the wedding will go on. But postponing is definitely not an option due to going back to school that summer.
Is anyone else having the same issues. Or how they would field these anxiety causing questions.

Honestly, I think it's WAY too early to know what's going to happen a year from now. The best response in this situation is to have a stock phrase, like, "We are monitoring the situation and will adjust according to public health officials! We'll let you know if anything changes!" And then change the subject.

(Frankly, that's the best way to deal with anything that gets too intrusive.)

    Good luck!

Agree with Rebecca. It's way too early to make the call. Just give questioners a generic response about how it's too early to know what next year will bring but you will let them know later on if anything changes. I think you will have a better sense of things in late-fall this year.

I’m in the same boat even though our destination wedding is domestic, it is next April. We are currently just waiting to see what happens the rest of the year because it is way too early to tell. Just keep in touch with your venue and vendors and if you have a wedding website, post updates there for your guests!

I'm in a similar situation with our semi-DW for March 2021. We had a 2+ year engagement to plan the wedding of our dreams and really don't want to postpone. For now, we are planning as normal and sending STDs, with the agreement that if things aren't looking up by September/October we will reevaluate before we order our real invitations. However, since our wedding is still domestic, we at least don't have to worry about international travel so I'm sure that adds an extra layer of stress. Fortunately we haven't gotten many questions about it. Are you planning on sending STDs? My suggestion would be to send them out, and tell anyone who asks that you are planning as normal for now. April flights are just now becoming available and a lot of airlines are offering more lenient cancellation policies on new bookings if people decide they want to go ahead and book.

I also think it’s too early to know. If the worst case scenario happens with covid, I don’t think an April Euro wedding would be likely, but I think we will knows lot more in the fall. Thinking about you as you’re planning!

    Hi Amber,

I’m living in the Netherlands (not sure where in Europe your wedding will be next year). In my country European flights are resuming per 11th of May again, very limited (15% of the pre COVID flights). Europe is in general a little ahead at the US, however it really depends on the country with regards to reopening. West and Northern European countries dealt in a better way, compared to south of Europe. We are having our wedding in California. The original date was in May, we rescheduled for October 1st with an option to postpone till May 2021. Keep your guests informed and tell them you’re following the latest updates and are doing everything within your knowledge to keep them informed. I’m sure they will appreciate your updates.
Good luck and let me know if you need any insights from Europe.

    Hi Denian,
Thank you for that information in the perspective of someone In Europe! Our wedding is planned for Northern Europe so I hope that helps. I wish you well too with your wedding! I'm glad I was able to communicate with others who are in similar situations. Its definitely stressful just thinking about it, more so when everyone has to give their input. I will send out a message to inform everyone we will see how the world heals, and let everyone know early fall. Thanks again!
