Dessert Dilemma

So I keep hearing that cakes are a waste of money - no one likes cake and would rather drink than have a slice. So I keep hearing that cakes are a waste of money - no one likes cake and would rather drink than have a slice. My fiancée and I are planning on ordering a small cake for us to cut, but I’m on the fence about what kind of dessert to provide for our guests. My initial thought was to order cupcakes but if people really don’t want cupcakes then I would rather do something else. What I’m leaning toward now is doing a cookie bar - that way it’s something different from cake, I can have variety for guests with different tastes, and I can provide take-home bags for extras at the end of the night. As a guest, would you prefer cupcakes, cookies, or something else?

Thank you and happy wedding planning to all!

I have a friend who along with his husband had a donut cake. It was layered tiers of mini donuts. I wasn't there, but the pictures looked delicious! A cupcake tower would also be cute. We thought about that but in the end decided for a traditional cake. My fiance's sister and her husband actually had a mini cannoli tower; neither of them were cake fans, plus it was her third marriage and his second, so they chucked out a lot of traditions.

I never thought of it as rude because I know other people who have done it, and never thought anything of it. It’s good to hear how other people receive it though.

I love wedding cake, but I might be the minority! My fiancé and I, however, aren't doing wedding cake. We are, most likely, serving quesillo, a flan-like dessert, as a nod to my fiancé's heritage. I think your guests will be happy with whatever sweet treat you decide to serve them!

As a sweets fiend, I would be happy with absolutely whatever the couple provided. (I do personally like cookies better than cake, but I would never complain about a couple serving wedding cake. How rude.)

However, I agree that it might be confusing to guests if you cut a cake and don't serve any cake. I have seen where the cake was a little smaller because it was served in addition to other sweets, and then guests had an option, but I don't know how you would account for that.

At my own wedding, we had a dessert table and cake, and I think only three or four people had cake. Everyone else went for the dessert table. I admit it was a little disappointing, because I picked our cake flavors with very careful intention to make sure there was a little something for everyone, and I assumed everyone would have a small slice of cake AND a small dessert. (See again: sweets fiend, I guess.)

I would say if you don't want to waste or if you might be disappointed if people select the other sweets over cake, choose one or the other. Cake only, or no cake.

I feel like any time I've heard someone not liking wedding cake, it's a bland white cake with fondant. I have never heard of someone liking a good cake, with flavor and a tasty (and not just decorative ) icing. Or flavorless icing that just tastes like sugar and food color (like all the colorful icing flowers, ick). I've had some *really* tasty cake, usually with buttercream and infused cake.

You know your crowd. For me, pretty much everyone actively likes cake or is kind of "meh" about it but will eat it if it's there. My cousin is a pastry chef and will be making our cake. It'll be 2 tiers and chocolate. Depending on the number of guests we plan to have, a friend might make cookies to go along with that. But, personally, I'd only do something like cookies in addition to a cake, not instead of one. If you and your spouse-to-be don't like cake then not having one makes a bit more sense. If you do, then have your dang cake and eat it too!

This all the way. It doesn't matter if other people have done it and no one said anything. Because guests never tell the couple when they are rude, but they will talk among themselves.

Again, I understand how some people may feel that way but I don’t necessarily think that’s always true. I’ve spoken to people who have been guests at weddings where the couple just cut a small cake and had other desserts and they didn’t think it was rude. But, I will say that I definitely do not want to offend anyone and want to make my guests happy, so I will likely avoid anything that could be perceived as rude by some guests.

I have seen some ideas for crepe cake, a lot of crepes layered on top of each other with whatever you choose to be between them or over them. I agree that people aren't too thrilled about the wedding cake, and go for other sweets that are offered at the reception. But I don't know many people that don't like crepe or pancakes so maybe that's a win! It is also probably cheaper than a wedding cake.

I like cake myself, but one thing that's making life easier is that our venue has catering on-site, which includes the wedding cake. Which means we can do the food and cake tastings at the same time. So much easier than having to hunt down one more vendor, plus the worries of cake transportation.

My fiancé and I both prefer pie over cake but I do like the look of a tiered wedding cake. Ultimately we’ve opted to go for a “dessert table” in lieu of favors. Options will be cannolis, macaroons, tarts, cookies, slices of pies and other small treats. All together the cost will balance out to if we had done a large wedding cake + favors.

I polled my bridal party about dessert options as I heard the same and cake was the second highest want, only by 1 vote!

So we’re going to do a small, decorated cake for my fiancé and to cut, then buy a bunch of Costco sheet cakes (1 sheet cake feeds 40 people and costs $18), and use the money saved to do a gelato bar (which was the number one want from my poll)

My fiancé and I are doing a small cake for us to cut, with cupcakes and cookies for the guests. We know we have people who don't like cake, and from what I have heard form his Pittsburgh relatives cookie tables are a big thing there. So Cookies will be added.

I prefer plain cakes since I'm someone with a nut allergy.

Costco sheet cakes are amazing and if our reception site didn't include the cake in our wedding package I'd have just gone for Costco. I would be thrilled if I went to a wedding and Costco cake was served.
