Day of Coordinator? Is it necessary?

MLS, on July 30, 2020 at 6:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Did you use a day of coordinator? Or did you do it yourself? Did you have a family member help you?

I am having a fairly large wedding, and I am incredibly nervous about everything getting done while I am getting ready.

I think a day of coordinator is really useful. I got one only for a couple of hours to help set up my reception. The venue that you have might even have one themselves already

I had a very small wedding and had family help but I wish I could have gotten one! Unfortunately it was a little out of my budget.

We used one and our wedding wouldn’t have been possible without her and her team. Best money we spent on the entire event. I spent a year and a half planning our wedding and was determined to not lift a finger the day of. Maybe if you can get into your venue the day before to put out decor it would be possible, but we didn’t have that option.

I feel the exact same way. My fiance and his family and groomsmen are going to set up the majority on the day of. And the night before when we have our rehearsal dinner we all are going to set up as much as the venue allows us to. We are not going to be doing a day of coordinator. I'm going to take pictures of how I would like everything and hopefully the guys can pull it off. I'm also very nervous because there's a lot of glass decorations and I'm nervous they will break on the drive there.

My daughter is the most organized (and retentive?) person on the face of the earth, and we STILL felt like hiring her DOC was the VERY best thing we did. I would absolutely prioritize a good DOC over extra/fancier decor, add-ons like a photo booth or late-night snacks, "extras" like special transportation/favors/whatever.... A good DOC is an insurance policy/a miracle worker/peace of mind. Daughter's venue coordinator provided some support/services, but her separate DOC allowed both her and I to relax and completely enjoy every second of the day. In the grand scheme of things she was the best money we spent. Smiley heart

    It depends on your venue.
My venue required a professional doc.
Outside of mine, I’ve never been in/to a wedding that had one. At least that I knew of.

Yes it is a must have. They are completely different from the site rep that your venue will have on hand. The day of coordinator will run interference and keep things flowing without putting any stress on you or your attendants.

I definitely would say yes, unless you can designate someone to take care of everything the day of & help you stick to your timeline

The owners of the venue where we’re getting married are also the coordinators. They have an all inclusive package that we opted for. At one point I was having an issue with the caterer (trying to set up a tasting). I called & emailed multiple times with no response. I was getting so frustrated that I finally called Tony (the owner of the venue) & told him what was going on. He put a quick stop to it! Said “you make 1 call to any of the venders & if you get no response, call me & I’ll take care of it.” Bam! 15 mins later I received an email from the caterer! This takes a HUGE burden off my shoulders! I have all the confidence that our wedding is going to be perfect with no stress or worrying about every detail! 4/3/21 can’t come soon enough!

Our venue is almost all inclusive and it has a coordinator, but if it didn't we definitely would've hired one. We're not having one for our (covid) mini wedding, and it feels like way more work than our 10x larger, but with a coordinator, wedding.

I think it depends entirely on how all-inclusive your venue is. I literally had two outside vendors - cake baker and photographer, and the venue provided everything else, apart from some decor. I had absolutely no need for a DOC, because the venue coordinator dealt with everything. We were able to get in the day before and set up the decor that we provided and that was it, nothing else needed. But if you’ve got multiple different vendors to coordinate, it’s a very smart idea.

Does your venue provide one? If not, then YES. Hire one. We had 2 who kept our timeline, wedding & vendors on track... and we only had 15 guests.

I'd hire one, they'll be sure everything runs smoothly & you won't need to worry about anything especially if potential problems arise then they'll take care of it.

If our venue didn't already provide us with assistance & had their own coordinators, we would've been looking into it.

Look up Jamie Wolfer on YouTube. She’s a wedding planner and has a whole video about why you cannot coordinate your own wedding.
You have so much to do that day. Do you really want to run around and set up each little thing? Tear it all down at the end of the night?
If you’ll have family help, you can go without one, but you really have to think about whether or not it’s worth it. Do you want your family members to have to spend hours (two for setup, one for tear down) working on your wedding day? Coordinate with each vendor for you?
Our venue has a coordinator, otherwise I would absolutely hire one. She’s the one who keeps the timeline going, will ensure all of our decor is set up the way it needs to be, have the chairs and alter ready to go, handle tear down, keep track of all of the items we bring in, etc. We are so lucky to have her!

My venue came with one, and she was super helpful. I actually barely saw her all day, because she was doing her job and making sure I didn't have to think about anything. (Gave her a glowing review after.)

I can't imagine having done it without her - she managed all the vendors and the room flips, and so on.

If you can afford one, or find a venue with one, go for it.

I hired one. I want to be able to relax on my wedding day and not be stressed out about anything going wrong. I also do events for my job, and I wanted to not feel like I'm working lol

Our venue came with a coordinator. She was amazing! Got everything set up for ceremony and reception, kept myself and H from running into each other before the wedding, arranged vendors, brought up the food/drinks we had stuck in the fridge to the bride's room - just all around amazingly helpful.

If you're having a large wedding, I would suggest having at least a DOC. Mine has been a godsend throughout the ups and downs of COVID planning, postponements, etc.

And when it is your day, you can relax knowing your DOC do everything they can to bring your vision to life while you're getting ready.

I was originally going to have a wedding planner/coordinator but it was out of budget. Thankfully a couple friends of my family are helping out a ton and they are really good amateur planners. I would have someone help so you can focus on your day, but you don't need to necessarily shell out $1000's for it.
