Davids Bridal Alterations Rant (UPDATE!!!)

Alison, on September 28, 2012 at 7:59 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

So when I bought my dress from DB I didn't know how long it took 2 alter it, so I asked the alteration department. They suggested a good date for my first fitting, so I booked the date. @ my 1st fitting I was then given a date to come back for my 2nd fitting. So I planned for my BM to come with me to learn the bussel (she doesn't live close so I made sure it would be a time she could make). Now after a month of them having the dress I am so excited to go see it again. They call me the night b4 my appt. to tell me that they have had illnesses and were hoping to push back my appt. another 2 weeks. If I agreed 2 that I would be having my 2nd fitting 1 week b4 my wedding. Now this gave me great anxiety 2 think well what if I go try it on and I dont like what they did & I want a change are they going to be able to fix it in less than a week, something that took them a month to get done in the 1st place? (CONT'D)

So my FH called them back & told them this is ridiculous you've had it for a month and we could have made the 1st fitting earlier, but you told us what a good first date would be. Now you call us the night b4 and expect us to move her appt. 2 one week b4 the wedding, I'm not dealing what that and the anxiety you are causing her. SO they caved and said ok just come in tomorrow. Now I'm worried their going to do a rush hack job on my dress and it wont look good. Sorry girls I just needed to rant!!!!

Ok, at least they called you. It's not like they can help an illness. Take a deep breath and call the manager to speak directly to her/him. Reiterate that you wedding is quickly approaching and see what they can do. Maybe there is another DB in the area that could take over now to get things taken care of??

Well i'm going to go to night and shee what happens, but if they rushed it and did a bad job you can bet I will be talking to a manager. I only have 3 BM 2 live in NY so that's like a 4 hour drive and the other lives about an hour and a half away, and she has not prob comming she just needs to have enough time to get to me after work.

Oops..sorry, apparently your were still typing =) I'm sure they are trying to accomodate other bride's that were affected by the same illness. Hopefully all will work out for you and I'm sure you will be gorgeous on your wedding day =)

That's funny...a girl I know used them and they said both of their seamstresses were had fainted and were ill and they didn't know if they'd have her dress in time! I think she may have added the "don't know if they'll have my dress in time"

I bought my dress there, but it just needs a bustle, so I'm not going to them. But they suggested my first fitting be in June, five months before my wedding, and the said typically you have at least three fittings. But, it was the same shop as that girl I know.

ANYWAY, just breath, I'm sure it will be fine, but they really could have called you sooner? I would have expected it to be closer to done.

They told me that about a month and a half before the wedding would be plenty of time for the first fitting to be scheduled. I don't need to much done, bustle, hem, and a little special stich on each boob to make it sit closer to my chest. Theirs no big taking the dress in or anything.

If it does look shoddy....start checking out local seamstresses online WITH reviews. I searched around for a couple days before I found one who does a LOT of wedding dresses and had rave reviews. And they were right! She is super nice and really knows what she's doing. It's a little out of the way, but soooo worth it to not have to worry about my dress being messed up or not done on time.

Final fitting today! (hopefully...I've lost more weight, lol)

Seriously, I would never use DB for alterations. You are much better off with an independent seamstress. Here's why:

DB pays their seamstresses $12 an hour.

Yep, that $90 you pay for a bustle pays for the seamstress and for DB's cut. If you work with an independent seamstress they get all the money. Not only does that mean you will get better quality, but they take pride in the work they do and need to maintain a good reputation for themselves.

The DB seamstresses are seamstresses who could not make it on their own. Otherwise they would never consent to working for $12 an hour when they can make much more than that.

Good luck, and don't feel bad if you walk out with your dress and tell them to kiss off. You need to and deserve to have the best service.

Alison - I can tell you what probably happened with David's alterations room. I used to manage one. Corporate sets sales goals for the alterations department. They even break down how many $ in alterations you need to be doing with each bridal or non-bridal dress. Dresses come in, get pinned, customer pays. Then the alterations room has 200 or so dresses hanging on the line to be sewn. They are sorted by the date they need to be finished for the pick up appointment. Some weeks there are a lot of difficult dresses to sew, and even though they have made a commitment to have the dresses done, corporate will not pay for any overtime for seamstresses. In fact just within the last year or two they made all of the seamstresses take part time status so they would not have to pay benefits.

A good alterations manager will clock out, stay at work late, come in early and basically work and worry themselves sick about making sure all gets done.

A bad alterations manager will just not care. There are times when unforeseen things happen with employees - illness, someone gets another job. God forbid something happens to two of them.

The problem as I see it lies with the amount of work ($&dollarSmiley winking expected with total disregard to how it will get done.

I had a great experience with my DB alterations. They cost way less then the other quotes I got from 5 "independent" seamstresses and this was the same for all my bridemaids. Hope it works out for you

So I went last night & 1st I had to wait b/c they were finishing my alterations. Then I put it on & I already see things I dont like. They did somthing called a ease stich right above the boob so the dress would lay flat, but it left a little weird pocket right next to my arm. The seamstress said yeah I thought it looked bad when I did it & I should have just taken it in @ the seam. I was like YEAH and you're going to do that now b/c I hate it. It also needs to be taken in @ the hips b/c I lost 5 pounds. They also did a horrible job steaming it. Now I know my material is supose to look a little wrinkly, but the folds along the bodice should be crisp and they DEF were not. So moral of the story is I didnt get to take the dress home & I have to go back next week to *cross fingers* bring it home. (pic from when I was choosing the dress not from fitting)
