Cutting the Cake Alternatives Needed!

Soon2BeMrs.W, on May 27, 2013 at 9:14 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14

I'm making the "wedding cake" for a friend but they have requested a cupcake tree with a faux top layer instead of a traditional cake (caterer charges cake cutting fee of $4/slice). They are having an "alternative" wedding and I'd love to give them some suggestions of alternatives to the traditional picture of cutting the cake.

***This is not my design in the picture but I wanted to give you an idea of what I mean. The top will be made out of Styrofoam - yes Styrofoam - so it has more of a wedding cake look to it and the rest will be edible cupcakes.***

They could actually cut a cupcake. Or just take a forkful each out of the same cupcake to feed each other.

Why not just feed each other a cupcake or have them make the top layer out of cake for you?

Thanks for the suggestions but we want to avoid the cutting all together because we don't want to get into any BS at all with the caterer. We're looking for something different and creative since they are very...alternative people (and no this is not my code for a gay wedding...these guys are just weird but wonderful friends of my fiancee)

Can you do mini-cupcakes or cake pops so they don't have to cut anything?

The cake-cutting fee is for cutting the cake for all the guests, I believe. I don't think they'll charge you if the bride and groom only do the cake cutting ceremony.

What if they just unwrap a cupcake and each of them takes a bite out of it?

Cake pops on the top is a cute idea, but if the caterer does not serve the top layer there should be no cake cutting fee.

I appreciate these ideas but I'm really looking for something out of the box other than just feeding each other cupcakes. As for the caterer I'm not working with him but a number of the things he's saying to our friends is shady and I'm not taking any risks since the cake is on my end of things and I would hate to have him try and screw them over by saying well there was cake cut and we charge if any cake was cut. I just want to avoid any issues since this isn't my wedding.

Personally, if you're making this, I'd forego the styrofoam and then allow them to cut the top. I mean, it's a tiny tier why the styrofoam? -The caterer cannot charge if none of his people cut any cake. He's lame. Really, really lame. They need a new caterer.

And out of the box cake cutting is just kind of hard, I mean, it's cake cutting. What else is there? I've seen the couple cracking open two soda bottles (like the glass kind) maybe that could work?

That's not why the fee is there. The fee is for them to cut slices and serve them to the guests. That would be SUPER Shady for them to charge the couple for their first cut, since the caterer doesn't do anything. I can't think of anything "unique" since there are only so many ways to put a piece of cake/cupcake/ dessert into your mouth. The only unique things I can think of is how thy cut it. ie a sword or something crazy haha

I would check with the caterer. They should not charge for the couple to cut a slice. The per slice fee is for the caterering staff to cut slices for all guests.

@HalloweenBride - This guy has been a jerk to them but he's the one required to be used by their reception venue. He's screwed them on a number of things so far and while I've gently explained to them that certain things are not normal they feel they can't say anything since if they lose him they lose their reception venue. If it was me I would obviously say something and involve my contact at the reception venue in these issues but it's not my wedding and I can only be OCD about one wedding at a time Smiley smile I don't think he would do it but he's charging them for insane things - like one fee to set up paper plates and names and a higher fee to set up china/glass. I'm not talking about a higher charge for the stuff itself but for the set up. Not delivery, just set up. Insanity.

Do you need to do any type of photo? We went to a wedding recently where they had a dessert bar instead of a cake and didn't do a traditional photo for the dessert.
