Creative wedding readings

J&R, on July 9, 2011 at 2:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

We count ourselves among the "spiritual, but not very religious" of the world. Our ceremony will be a civil ceremony, and I've love something creative and unique for our reading. I've always loved Kahlil Gibran on marriage, but it's been SO done. So far I've found a couple of things I like by Mr. Rogers, Joss Whedon (Buffy), and a poem equating love to dog ownership (love that, too bad my pup can't come to the wedding!), but I'm still looking to see if there's anything else that REALLY fits us. Any ideas for something off the beaten path? Or particularly touching? Thanks!

Does your officiant offer a selection? After I've gotten to know my couples at least a little bit, I go thru my selection and pick what I think they may like and submit it for their approval.

Do a search for wedding readings with keywords that apply to the two of you.

BTW, if anyone is interested, I'm happy to paste the passages I've already found. Some of them really make me smile, and that's what I want for our wedding (and our wedding guests).

Thanks, Nancy. I just got the basic script from the officiant, and while the vows themselves are nice, and Corinthians is also perfectly nice, I would really like a reading (or readings) that are more personalized, and maybe a touch funny. I've been searching exactly as you suggested and found a few things, but a web search can only get me so far since I'm not sure exactly what will tickle our fancies. There's a lot of traditional (and, frankly, beautiful) scripts online, but not many of the type I'm looking for - maybe slightly offbeat. Next up, song lyrics!

I suppose I can add that FH and I knew each other as kids, so something that touches on our common backgrounds and childhoods (seems to be primarily cultural references) would be nice. Seriously, one of my candidates is from Mr. Rogers. Smiley smile

A friend of mine had sonnet readings, but if you're not a big fan of classic lit, I wouldn't go there.

Sonnets are beautiful. I actually have a couple of classics in mind, but I don't think they're FH's thing. But thank you!

If you're talking about Taylor Mali's "Falling In Love is Like Owning a Dog" GO FOR IT! I love that one and am using it. I've also considered van gogh, and a reading from the little prince and a book called a Lovely Love Story. Smiley smile

    That's it!!

    Also found this online: http://www.polkadotbride.com/2007/11/dr-seuss-weddings/

While I think all 3 of us (FH, officiant, and me) would get totally tripped up, I also think it's hysterical.

Another suggestion would be a reading from the book, "The Alchemist"

One wedding I went to had a reading chosen by the bride and one chosen by the groom... they both really showed the couple's personalities.

Katebonnykate, that's exactly what we're trying to do! Except FH already chose one of the readings I found for his friend to read, lol. So now I'm stuck! Smiley smile LOL

The Taylor Mali reading is amazing. If you email me privately, I'll send you the list that I send to my clients; Sedaris, Lamott; not a letter to the Corinthians in sight.
