Couples who are having your ceremony/reception in the same place...

Shannon, on June 16, 2019 at 6:06 PM Posted in Planning 1 45

If you're having your ceremony/reception in the same place...how are you dealing with a DJ? I'm trying to think about logistics as far as set up. Would he be setting up while the ceremony is happening? Or do I want to spend more money to have him set up early?

I’m going to have mine set up maybe 30 minutes before my ceremony. I don’t want a long ceremony so they won’t be waiting around to long. I do want the dj ready tho so as soon as it Ceremony end they can make the announcement to head to cocktail hour/and find their seats.

Our DJ is providing music for both the reception and ceremony. I am not sure how they are handling set up though.

    That's not a bad idea.

I kind of figured DJ knows and venue knows what works best since the are professionals.

I would ask the DJ what they normally do. They will likely tell you when they need to set up based on your timeline.

Thanks everyone. We haven't chosen a DJ yet and won't for a while yet. Just planning ahead.

My DJ just has a bar fee so she is setting up around 2 or 3, ceremony is at 4 then she will just play for the reception as well.

My DJ is also providing my ceremony music and will doing a small set up for that but the larger one for the actual reception will be before the ceremony so he basically just has to walk over and start playing.

Sorry, I meant base fee. When you interview DJs ask how they charge for ceremony and reception. I found some who did one flat price for X amount of hours and some who charged separately. One DJ was going to charge me $200 for the ceremony. That's pretty good money for something that lasts a total of about 20 minutes.

Our DJ charges for hours of music played (music on/music off). He doesn’t charge for the time spent on setup & cleanup. He knows he cannot setup during ceremony, so he will setup half an hour or so before. This is the norm in our area.

I guess I am concerned about nothing at this point. Was just a thought in my mind. When we start really looking for DJs, we'll be sure to ask those questions. Thanks, Ladies!

My DJ said that he usually sets up about an hour before the ceremony starts. He isn’t charging us for the time he uses to set up. I don’t know if that is the norm or if we just lucked out.

Ask your DJ, he probably has a timeline for this. 😊

Our church has a sound system that our DJ is using. He will also have his equipment set up in the fellowship hall as well.

I have decided to have a I pod play for the ceremony (wedding coordinator will be assisting with this) and just have the dj for the actual reception...
