College mascot at reception?

Sally, on November 30, 2016 at 5:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 45

So almost all of the guests at the wedding are Buckeyes and the wedding is on OSU campus... but it might be obnoxious to have Brutus Buckeye show up to the reception briefly (he'll be wearing a tux). My parents really want to do it and think it might be cute for Brutus to get people dancing after dinner. What do you think? Laughing as I'm posting this...

FH and I both went to the same college and that would be a big NO from me.

We also didnt go to a school with a massive sports following like OSU (Our school doesnt even have a football team!). I think it would really depend on your guests and the type of wedding you are having.

Totally dependent on you guys. My FH went to OSU and we both grew up here in Columbus but would never do that because it's just not us. I know friends who would do it though and for them it would be perfect! We're just not the "school spirit" type people.

Also! Are you guys doing the faculty club? We almost booked there Smiley smile it's beautiful

You know your crowd best. But my gut reaction when I read the title was 'no'.

This sounds horrible to me. But u wouldn't want a stuffed giant kangaroo at my wedding.

I saw pictures where someone had done this before, and the only thing I could think the whole time was why in the world would you have a mascot at your wedding? I mean, if you really want to then go for it, but I would advise otherwise. It just doesn't really make sense at a wedding.

I live in Columbus and I'm an osu alum. If you have a big Columbus crowd, I think it would go over well. I attended a wedding two years ago where Brutus came towards the end of the reception for about 10 or 15 minutes and it was fun! We definitely plan on playing Hang On Sloopy because we know it will get our crowd out on the dance floor. It just depends on your crowd!

My vote is no as well. Reminds me of a clown coming to a childs birthday party.

Sounds like the general consensus is no but depends on your guests. My guests are kind of obnoxious about OSU / in general (love them) and might love it... but it just sounds so ridiculous. Might do it but just tell the photographer not to take photos. Don't want any evidence of this haha

If I could have my school mascot come I would in a heartbeat! I think it is great if you have a lot of fans in your guests and your reception is on campus which is cool.

H loves his college and is a proud alumni… played football there and still supports them financially. This wouldn’t even cross his mind.

That would be a big no…. and not just because I am Spartan Smiley smile

I'm another vote for no. Even if it's just this irrational fear I have of mascots.. It's super creepy to me.

I once saw an ad for wedding appearances by the mascot from my undergrad. He was expensive. I'm a proud alumni and have always has a soft spot for that giant blue chicken, so initially when I saw that ad prior to our engagement, I thought it sounded fun. Until I kept reading, saw the price, and decided there's no way to justify that. I think most of my guests would find it a little ridiculous. A hug and a picture with YoUDee on my wedding day would make my day, but I think I'd be the only one excited about it.

I think if you wouldn't be proud of any picture evidence of your mascot being at your wedding, it's probably not something you need to do.

I think that would be really fun. You know your guests best and if you think they'd eat it up (and you and your FH would enjoy it) then go for it!

@BlueHenBride, agreed. It does feel like something I'm more doing for my guests/family than for me. I'm still torn though ahhhh

I think it needs to be a mutual want. If it's just for your family and you and DH are going to be embarrassed by it, I think that's a good reason to skip it. I also think that if you were just going to do it for you and you knew your guests wouldn't be into it, then it doesn't make sense to put your guests through it. I think it's only a good idea if you, FH, and your guests would all enjoy it.

One of my friends had our mascots ( Mr. And Mrs Wuf) come to her wedding and from the pictures it seemed like everyone enjoyed it. If they come you should definitely get photos though! I think it's a know your crowd thing and I would only have Brutus for 30mins max otherwise it will steal attention from you guys

That sounds terrible to me, but I suppose it depends on the crowd.
