Cocktail Hour at Ceremony Location

Leedee28, on February 24, 2020 at 12:58 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8
Hi All,

We’re planning on getting married in Salem, Ma and are torn between two venues. One is outdoors and one in inside in a ballroom. We are planning on getting married in the summer and want to incorporate the outdoors as much as possible, but don’t want to rent a tent for the entire reception. So here’s what we’re thinking:
We were thinking of doing our ceremony at the House of the Seven Gables. It’s a historic venue with beautiful black painted homes on the water. Soo many different photo opportunities there! We love the idea of extending our time as such a lovely venue abs having our cocktail hour there following the ceremony. Then, having our reception a half a mile away at the ballroom in the Hawthorne Hotel (which we will provide shuttles for).
Has anyone else done something like this with having the ceremony and cocktail hour in the same location? (Especially since it’s only a half mile away) Should I still rent a small tent for a shaded area during cocktail hour?
Has anyone else done this or is planning on doing something similar?

I would have either a tent or a backup option for this. Summer can be really hot here in MA and an hour in the sun can be a lot for some people and you also should always account for the possibility of rain.

Thanks! That’s what I’m thinking. I’m assuming the tent would be a little smaller so I guess I would have to find out the cost difference

I did this ! I had my social hour at my ceremony location and had reception at another place. It’s fine. Doesn’t make a huge difference

Thanks! How did the flow into the reception go? That’s one of the things I’m concerned about. Did it take a little bit for folks to orient themselves?

Melle, one other question about this: How did you word your invitations? I want to make sure people know that cocktails are to follow the ceremony in that location. Thanks!

You know what I don’t think I did aha. Because it was kind of a last minute thing. But I have seen people write “cocktail hour to follow”
