Checkout my pics! Similar Body Types Out There? 5'9'' 38-29-44 Need Wedding Dress/Silhouette Advice

Janay, on January 30, 2013 at 4:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

Hey Ya'll!

My current body measurements are 38"- bust (38 DDD), 29"- smallest part of my waist, 44"- hips around butt and everything, too. (pics below to get a general sense of my body type). So, I will be going dress shopping for the first time this Sunday at a Maggie Sottero trunk show. According to the size chart for the designer I will be dress shopping for, I am a size 12 bust, size 10 waist and a size 16 hips. So, my questions are:

1. What size does this mean I will have to order?

2. Do there tend to be dresses in these sizes as samples in the dress boutique?

3. Any advice or pics of brides with similar dresses? What size did you have to order? What was your shopping experience like?

4. Any suggestions for silhouette type?

I put pics below so you can see what my shape looks like, since it's hard to just decide based on a bunch of measurement numbers.

Thanks times a million in advance and the best to you and your nuptials!

I would look for something that fits tight through to the top of your butt then flairs out... maybe a halter top to rein in the girls Smiley winking

Hey there if you're looking for a maggie sotterro at a trunk show you'll almost surely need alterations.... I'm a 36G so I had to get a dress that fit that and they brought the rest in...

That's typically how they handle that, they match your largest measurement and then bring the rest of the dress in, easier to tuck than to have to add fabric. I dont have hips like yours (though believe me I wish I did!!!!) that may not be a factor it'll depend also on the sillouette of the gown.

The salon will be able to help you out but in general, go with your biggest measurements and then trim it down from that

Good luck let us know how it goes!!!

When your bridal consultant measure you, she will tell you which size dress she suggest you order.

I would say try on any and every silhouette you can/want. In my experience, with wedding gowns, you never know what will look good and what won't until you try it on. It may not look good on the hanger, but it looks great when you try it on and vice versa. Good luck!

They don't order the gowns typically for the trunk show, the point is to get rid of existing gowns which could mean limited sizing and styles but dont be afraid to try on other designers and styles while your there too

    My advice...

    1. Size depends on the designer...also the sizes are way different... depending on the designer I'm a size 0 to a 6... wedding dress shopping I'm a size 8 - on average.. so don't be surprised by the sizes...

2.This can be a hard one, typically they have to fanagle the dress anyways so they have clips, etc to figure it out... so don't worry too much about this...

    3. I am not as curvy as you are but I do always have to have my clothes altered because of my body type so make sure that you allow time for the seamstress to make these alterations and order your dress early.

    4. First day be adventuresome - try on dress types you would normally never wear, fabrics you don't like, etc. It all looks so different once on a wedding dress - I almost picked a ball - like I'm a Disney princess getting married - type of dress ---totally not my style - but ended up not going with it because the material was too delicate for an outdoor wedding - but I would have never tried it on -

Ooh one last tip I learned from trying on a few gowns store to store... some salons will change the sizes on their tags to prevent brides from visiting their salons and then trying to find the gown online cheaper. It sounds bad on their part but if you think about it, they put in the effort of providing customer service and other factors... I think if you get excellent service from a salon the right thing to do is support them and purchase your gown through them

As for silhouette - you want to show off your curves & look sexy go for something that hugs your curves like a mermaid... you want something more modest try on something that gathers at your natural waist, like where high waisted pants hit, and then falls away from the body.

Above all else - have fun - start with what the sales person says and it's ok to also stray from their advice... I told them I want to try on every style and bring me 2 that you think that would look the best on me. That way I learned whether I can trust the sales person or not - some of them had no idea - some were awesome... you'll learn what you like and what you don't Smiley winking

In general, they will tell you to get the size that fits the largest part of your body. In your case, that would be a 16 in street clothing. However, depending on the designer, bridal clothing sizes can be much larger than street sizes. So be prepared for the fact that you may be an 18 or 20 in bridal clothing.

Balancing that out, in A-line or ballgown styles, the bottom of the dress typically fits less snugly than the top. So in those styles, you may find you can get a dress that fits the top of you, without worrying so much about the bottom.

In any event, you just have to try on dresses and see how they fit. There is so much variation in bridal sizes that there is just no predicting ahead of time what will fit. The important thing is to make sure a dress fits your largest measurement, as it is much easier to take a dress in than to take it out.

Janay, you have a beautiful body and you should flaunt it! You have great curves with a tiny waist that I think would be great for a trumpet gown...And wedding gown sizes are waaaaay different than the size you are. I'm also curvy and I'm a size 6-8 depending the designer/brand, but my wedding dress is size 10. I didn't panic when I tried it on because I had watched all episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress" and realized that it happens to the size 2 girls as well LOL Watch it if you can, it helped me a lot!

I attached a picture of a dress that I think will flatter your figure incredibly...I do know from my best friend, who is also a 38DD, that strapless is a no-no for her, so maybe something similar to this dress with straps (halter or one shoulder)...You will look gorgeous in any dress you choose...and like Lauren W. says, I would try on different styles of dresses, sometimes that one you least expect will be the one you love.

Thank you all so much for your comments, advice and pics Smiley smile I really appreciate it and feel a little more confident about what to expect with my fitting this Sunday. I have to be honest and say that buying a size 18 or 20 dress is absolutely mortifying, but I have to keep in mind that the goal is to look great, no matter what dress size. I'll be posting pics soon, along with accompanying sizes in hopes I can help some other readers. Thanks again, ladies!

Don't worry about the dress size!!! I have very similar measurements to you and I ended up having to get a size 16 dress to accommodate my hips even though my waist and chest are not that size! Dresses tend to fit on the smaller side of your normal everyday clothing size, so definitely don't stress about the dress size! After all, it's only a number and they will do alterations to make sure the dress fits you perfectly for your wedding day Smiley smile

Here a picture of me in my dress (excuse the look on my face, I wasn't ready for the picture to be taken). I tried on a bunch of different styles, including one that was similar to what Lily C posted and it looked good on me, but this is the one that won me over!

If you want a fitted dress, they will likely order you a 16 (if not at a trunk show) and alter it to fit you. However, I also have bigger hips than my top and on most A-line or ball gowns I have tried, I can get it to fit the top and the bottom will flow over the hips.

@Lily C, Thank you!! The sample dress obviously did not fit me, but I am SUPER excited for it to come in and for me to see it! The one I tried on is ivory in colour and I ordered it in white-white.

First off wow,you are a BRICKHOUSE! You need a fit and flair something that will showoff your curves in a good way.I have a shape similar to yours but on a little larger scale(working on trimming it down). They are gonna have to get you a dress to try on based on your bust size. DONT FREAK OUT! They are gonna put clothes pins in it so that they can fit it you your size. You may be in a dress that has a size 18 or 20 on the label . Dont worry about the size of the wedding dress becasue it it gonna have to be altered to fit your fabulous figure anyway. Just think how when you wear that size it will be size YOU. Here are a couple of ideas. Yes you can wear strapless, you just have to make sure that your dress is properly fitted.

Dress sizes are out the window. Generally I'm a 6 and in dress I was a 10

And have learned my boobs are smothered in it. It's scary but they aren't true to life, size doesn't really matter you have curves it's not like you have put on a ton of weight,it's just a number

I had a dress similar to what Latisha L. listed. My measurements are close to yours.

Just go and try stuff on.. corsets I found worked the best. I also like dresses with side ruching.

Great curves!!! Enjoy them and show them off.

    and welcome to WW Janay.
