Changing my name... what a pain in the ***

Mrs. Noble, on June 25, 2013 at 9:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Has anybody else have difficulty with this? I've always known that after you get married, you can change your name in any format that you want to, heck, you can even hyphenate it! Maybe its more of a southern thing, but I've also always thought "traditional" (I guess) is to drop maiden middle name and the maiden surname becomes married middle name, with the hubby's surname becomes my married surname.

It can't be all that complicated.... right?!

Well, I've closed my checking and savings and moved it to joint account with hubby! The bank told us that we could just bring in the marriage certificate... today, the woman told me that I'd need to sign maiden name until I get this straightened out with name change. The marriage certificate only has change of surname but nothing about maiden middle name, so if I want to be A.S.N. it says I'm changing from A.B.S. to A.B.N.

I have papers to fill out for Social Security and won't get DMV for weeks bc I need doctor note saying i can drive!

Oh goodness, I'm going through my name change right now. I'm keeping my middle name and just swapping out my last name. But DMV is talking forever to get me my new license, but they already sent the new registration and I have the new insurance card......and getting changed just on law school records is a nightmare, of course I got selected for a "verification" process because when they changed my name, the woman didn't include my middle initial on my paperwork, but I included it when I first signed up. Such a pain in the neck!!!

The woman at the post office basically told me that I did not know what I was talking about, when I clearly tried to explain to her how it is supposed to be.... I should look for what Emily Post would say on this!!!

I have never even heard of that. I have only heard of dropping your maiden name and taking your husbands last name, as well as hyphenating, or not changing your name. This middle name thing is baffling me, lol.

I've been to DMV twice in the past week but this morning I took the medical release thing (I've had 2 known seizures in my life) to my neurologist and they have to fill it out and send it to headquarters in another city. I'm not going to bother dealing with DMV until I hear that that has gone through.

I don't even know how I managed to get licence when I officially changed residency in April... same damn NY but didnt have to deal with the medical form! LOL

Did you go to the DMV up on E. Hen Rd? Those ladies are always beeotchs to me I hate it there!

Sorry your going through all of this... Wondering if FH and I should open a joint account now while my name is still my name, and change it later on.

But maybe I shouldn't go to your bank it sounds like a pain in the booty!

Alot of my Asian friends do that. That's where I've heard of it the most. I've never heard of it being a traditional southern thing though. I will just be swapping out last names.

Sounds complicated. I'm only changing my last name. I know I can change that for free in Ohio but I think if I change my first or middle name then I have to pay extra and maybe see a judge or something. My county gave me instructions on how to change my name. See if the county where you live has any advice for changing your names.

    *** = ass!!!! Smiley surprise

Soon2beMrs.K - I went to a Mobile DMV downtown in the CityPlace, its on either Main or Exchange.

Christie and Stacy- This is the only way I've heard of people doing it, other than the hyphenating thing. It makes it vastly simpler for anyone who has known you your whole life.

Bank is local company. I closed my Bank of America account.

Social security is absolutely the first thing that you should do. Before any bank or credit card accounts. You can't do DMV without it either.

I'd go to the social security office and change your name how you want it. First Maiden Married. Then once you get your new social security card in the mail (they say 10 days but I got mine in like 4), take that along with your marriage certificate to your bank so you can show them that you legally changed your name to First Maiden Married. You should also get a "receipt" at the SS office that should indicate the name change that you could see if the bank would accept along with the marriage certificate.

    Has anybody used this? https://www.missnowmrs.com/?gclid=CKbnr4_SgbgCFZKk4Aod-x0ANw

It looks kind of nice but I've already started filling out some of the paper forms.

also... here are instructions from theknot.com... http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-planning/planning-a-wedding/articles/name-change-101.aspx

Changing your name to First Maiden Married, use to be very common. It's not done too often today, but up until about 1940s, that's how it was done. I think you should definitely deal with changing social security first, since that is federal level. What ever your name is on a federal level, the states and private companies have to accept it. Good Luck! It's really not as hard as it sounds.

The name change kits are a waste of money. All they do is auto-generate forms for you but you don't really need many forms when changing your name, and like you said, you already started filling out some of them.

They don't do any of the leg work for you. They don't sit in the social security offices and the DMV and wait for you. They don't make any of the phone calls.

The only thing that I needed a form for when changing was social security, my license and registration and eventually my passport when I get around to doing that (haven't needed a new one yet so have been too lazy to do it). It's not worth it. Not even for the common groupon price of 15 dollars that they have fairly regularly.

I'm suddenly so glad that I sign only ever with initials, and that my last name will always start with a c, both now and after the wedding. x-P

Is it common to drop your middle name and make your maiden name your new middle and add husbands name? I mentioned to my dad about hyphenating and he said he would be honored if I did that but I've been reading how annoying it can get at doctors offices and certain legal documents. I thought about dropping my middle and keeping my old last name and new last name.

In AL most women drop their maiden middle name and replace it with their maiden last name. I thought everyone did that honestly. None of my friends who've gotten married have had issues.

Like Mrs O said change your name with the SS office first. They will give you a receipt. That receipt will allow you to go to the dmv and change your dl, you don't need to wait for the new card. Then you get a paper dl and in 10 days you will get a new dl in the mail. The paper copy of your dl and receipt of your ssn change will allow you to change it at your bank.

What MrsO has said. I added H's last name in place of my second last name and had no issues -- in and out of the SS office in an hour flat, DMV was done in 20 minutes or so, passport mailed out and back in a month. Easy peasy.

@Jenn, so far with most things, since my maiden last name is still my legal last name, and it's not hyphenated, I've had no problems. Everything (CCs, insurance, etc.) has Reenski Awesome, so now that I'm Reenski Awesome Amazing, it's all still correct. I usually still only say my maiden name anyway, LOL.
