Changing my name... what a pain in the ***

Has anybody else have difficulty with this? I've always known that after you get married, you can change your name in any format that you want to, heck, you can even hyphenate it! Maybe its more of a southern thing, but I've also always thought "traditional" (I guess) is to drop maiden middle name...

Maybe its more of a southern thing, but I've also always thought "traditional" (I guess) is to drop maiden middle name and the maiden surname becomes married middle name, with the hubby's surname becomes my married surname.

It can't be all that complicated.... right?!

Well, I've closed my checking and savings and moved it to joint account with hubby! The bank told us that we could just bring in the marriage certificate... today, the woman told me that I'd need to sign maiden name until I get this straightened out with name change. The marriage certificate only has change of surname but nothing about maiden middle name, so if I want to be A.S.N. it says I'm changing from A.B.S. to A.B.N.

I have papers to fill out for Social Security and won't get DMV for weeks bc I need doctor note saying i can drive!

Most of my friends dropped their middle name and used their maiden name as there new middle name. I can't change any of my bank documents or pretty much anything else over to my new name until I have a new license. The SS security office has already taken 3 weeks, so I wont be able to get my license anytime soon with the lack of SS card.

Just trying to change my name of at work and with clients has been ridiculous.

@Jenn - yes, it is common and vastly easier for anyone who has known you your whole life!

I just got back from the SSA office... I am now Mrs. A. S. Noble ... by the way the google image results for "Anne Noble" are vastly hysterical ... that is NOT me!

I didn't sign my married name on my marriage certificate and I had no problems at any government office. All they needed to see was my marriage license to see that we were married and I was taking his last name.

I waited to do the bank until I had both my driver's license and SS card changed. Both were pretty easy; besides the annoying wait times.

As far as i know you can't do anything until you have a drivers license with your new name on it. I've got both DL and SS switched over but i don't have "proof" or a picture ID with my married name on it yet because they come in the mail. I havent even tried changing my name on anything or opening a joint account yet until i get my new license in the mail.

A marriage certificate alone is not proof of a new name. UNTIL you have a social security card and a drivers license with that new name.all a mairrage certificate is used for in a name change is as a REASON for a name change... it doesn't legally give you a new name. your drivers license or legal picture id does that.

best option is to just WAIT to change your name. its wierd trust me cus i've been married for almost 3 weeks and still using and signing my maiden name. Its much less hassle to wait until you have proof of a new name.
