Champagne toast or not to champagne toast, that is the question!

Mrs.B, on February 6, 2013 at 8:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

We're on a tight budget and I'm thinking its not really necessary to pay 3.50 a head for some gross champagne that half the people won't drink anyways. Can't they just toast with what their drinking at the moment or wine? I've just been to too many weddings where I see half the glasses untouched, what a waste of money. What y'all think?

Well I love champagne, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. I don't see anything wrong with toasting with the drinks they have, especially if it saves you a per head cost!

Agree. We are not doing a champagne toast. The guests will toast with whatever drink they have and the venue provides a champagne bottle for us at the sweetheart table.

The owner of my venue actually talked me out of doing a champagne toast! He said "I'll gladly take your money lol, but it will be a waste"

He said what you did, that not too many ppl drink the champagne and that they throw away SO much at the end of the night. He also said people will toast with whatever they have: wine, water, etc. He said he's even seen someone toast with the salt shaker. haha

If it's not in your budget, skip it. It most likely won't be missed.

We're skipping the champagne toast. We'll have a generous bar tab going, so they can toast with whatever's in hand Smiley smile

Neither FH nor I have a champagne we actually like, so we're going to provide some kind of sparkling juice. That way kids can participate as well.

We are doing toasting, but not to champagne or even cider. DIY alcohol, so guests can toast to whatever drink they have, kids can toast with sodas or juice boxes we are providing also.

Ok whew, good to know I'm not the only one! I hope no one cares!

That would be 490$ extra for 140 ppl, yikes

We have a bottle for FH and I and our BM and MOH to toast after speeches (since they snare doing the speeches). Everyone else will toast with whatever is in their hand.

Yeah if it is saving you that much I would definitely skip it! Ours is included in our venue price, but if I was paying extra for it I would have done what RayRay is and just had a bottle at the sweetheart table.

We have a list of those who will be toasting during the wedding, and instead of toasting with champagne, we will be toasting with glass bottles of Cheerwine or Coca-Cola Smiley smile

Those that decide they want to toast and are not on the list can just toast with whatever is in their hand.

I wanted to not have the toast, FH does. So we are having it. I would have preferred to toast with the glass they have in hand. It would have saved $ if we were able to cut it out. But we were able to buy the flutes at Ikea for $0.99 a 6 pack when they had them on sale instead of the $4.99 a 6 pack. The cost of renting the flutes was almost as expensive as us buying them (before I found them on sale). Especially for 200 people. Good luck, I wish we did not have to have it.

NO. People can toast with what is in front of them at the time.

Fortunately our venue includes it in the price they quoted us so yes we will be doing it but we are having a small reception any way around 60 people, champagne will be put on every table and there is an open bar so people can drink what ever they want....

Mine is included in the price, if it wasn't I wouldn't get it. What I get so confused about is how many places we looked at that were open bar, but the champagne toast was extra. Um aren't I paying for an open bar why, wouldn't that be included when it was part of the inventory that someone could order??

Neither FH nor myself are wine drinkers. He absolutely doesn't, I have to be in the mood for it. Instead, we're toasting with beer. I'm thinking a Texas brewer's spring edition, but not sure.

I think the toasts at my cousin's wedding were "whatever you have". Our mother's do NOT drink and several other family/friends didn't either, and I know several family/friends for our wedding will be the same (Best man, mother, FFIL, etc) so if they want to toast with a glass bottle soda Smiley laugh (something we decided to buy for the wedding) then that would be just fine!
