Chair question

Kelsey, on January 9, 2020 at 10:34 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 24

So my venue provides us with chairs for the ceremony and reception. I finally found a few pictures on here from the venue from this year. The chairs they have are just plain black ones, they look alright for the reception area. At first I didn't like the idea of black chairs but I'm going to deal with it since they come with the venue and do look decent in photographs; which is helping me feel better. My issue is I really dislike the idea of black chairs for the ceremony area, I feel like it will look dark and drab with them. I didn't realize this until October, but I thought that they had white folding chairs for the ceremony space but then was told that the white chairs are for another venue that my hotel owns about 2 miles away. The only solution would be to rent the white chairs, I'm just having a hard time justifying the added expense since chairs are included with the venue. I'm also irritated because I asked them about this when I signed my contract and they said verbally they have white chairs. As I write this I realize I sound super irrational. So what do you all think should I rent white chairs or will it only bug me that we have black chairs for the ceremony?

What are your wedding colors? Maybe the black will add more to the look than you think? However, if it's something that you think will bother you on that day then get the white chairs, or maybe find some white chair covers.

My wedding colors are blue, gray and ivory. I think the black will look fine with those colors for the reception area because of lighting and the way the room is set up. But we are planning on minimal decor for the ceremony so I just worry that the black will make it look darker. We are focusing more decor for the reception area.

Is it in your budget to rent the white chairs? I would definitely prefer white over black for the ceremony, but I also haven't seen photos of the black chairs in the ceremony space so it may not look as dark as I'm imagining. Then again, knowing my cheap self, I would probably stick with the free chairs regardless. Would it be possible to add some decoration to the black chairs to lighten them up a bit rather than the big expense of renting completely different chairs? Would you have to rent them through a rental company or would it be a little cheaper considering your hotel owns them at a different location? I also might consider mentioning to them that at the time of the contract signing, white chairs were promised.

I'd prefer white but I also don't feel like the chairs would dampen the mood as much as you think. You can add some ribbon in your wedding colors to help liven it up

I agree that the black chairs would drag the mood down then. Aesthetics are important to me too, so If it's in your budget, go for the white chairs!

I mean I think we could swing it, but I'm trying to save money where possible so I would rather not have to rent more chairs. I think whats bugging me is they have said a few times they have had ceremonies there before but I cannot find pictures of any ceremonies there. I know they are mainly a reception venue. I just wish I could see what it looks like so I wouldn't be overthinking this.

Would you consider chair sashes? I'm thinking something like white organza, over the black. I suggest checking CV Linens online for inspiration/ideas - most of their sashes are cheap <50cents each. Good luck!

I hated the standard chairs my venue offered, but it wasn't worth it to me to spend $8.50 per chair for different chairs. We were only allowed to rent upgraded chairs from the venue. We had the money, but at the end of the day the guests really don't care what color chairs they will be sitting in. I think black chairs will look just fine. I would talk to your venue to see if you can use the white chairs that they have for the other venue. When you asked them about it did they offer to put anything in writing. I would have made sure that was in writing. We did a custom menu and we made them put it in writing because we didn't want them coming back to us with something different down the road.

When we met with them the first time to do a venue tour, they said "depending on which venue you choose you can have white or black chairs" I followed that up by asking so white chairs are available for this venue which I received a yes on. We signed the contract last February then to hear in October this wasn't an option was disappointing. I looked over the contract and it doesn't specify which venue has the white chair option so I think that's what is bugging me about this. I would rather have been told upfront. I know I need to kind of let this go and just deal with the black chairs but just having a really hard time picturing it in my head.

I would definitely ask your venue to see photos so you can get better idea. Have you talked to the person who told you in February that you could use the white chairs?

Yeah it's the same coordinator that I have now. To be honest she isn't very good at her job and is not good at communicating so I think that is why maybe I misunderstood or there was a miscommunication. We have a meeting with her in March so hopefully she can show me some pictures then. I felt a lot better after seeing the pictures of the reception area with the black chairs, I'm hopeful that maybe I will feel the same way about the ceremony area.

Have you Googled the venue? Or maybe the venue has a Facebook page that you could look through?

The Facebook page is like a general hotel Facebook page. When I google the venue they have hotel pictures of the rooms, pool and other areas. They also have some of the reception set up and room (which are gorgeous) but they have none of the ceremony set up. Finding the pics on here was the closest I have found to pictures. I even installed instagram to see if I could find more. That didn't help.

Daughter's venue included the typical white wooden folding chairs for her wedding and she actually switched them out for dark fruitwood chairs because she liked the look better. Honestly, ceremony chairs will completely fade into the background. Once people are sitting in them (which they will be doing for 99% of any photos taken in the ceremony space) you will not even notice them -- the black will actually be LESS noticeable in photos because many guests will be wearing dark suits, dresses, etc., so everything will blend together vs. stark white chairs. I'd cross this off your list of concerns! Smiley winking Smiley heart

That's a good point. I guess I didn't think of it that way that most of the pictures will be when the chairs are filled and that people do wear darker colors to weddings. I guess I didn't think of it that way. Thank you!

I don't like to post/share daughter's photos, but I just looked at them to see if there was one I could crop and share to demonstrate how unnoticeable the chairs were, and it's funny, you literally barely see the dark chairs in the photos.... Another advantage of the dark chairs is that if there are any empty seats, they are MUCH less noticeable in photos with dark chairs. Because of some weird family dynamics on SIL's side, there were a bunch of empty chairs in the second and third row on the right side, and you cannot tell in the photos. If they'd been white chairs, I think it would have been much more obvious in pictures.
