Ceremony Readings Presbyterian Wedding

Jaimie, on March 3, 2014 at 3:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

I have an idea of what I'm selecting, but I'm wondering how long the readings are supposed to be. I could easily choose all of Song of Songs, but I'm sure that would be way too much. Does anyone know how many readings I'm supposed to have? I'm pretty sure it's two. And if one needs to be from the new testament and the other from the old. I was raised Catholic so I'm not sure.

What ceremony readings is everyone else doing?

We didn't have any specific requirements for our reading - our minister was fine with whatever we wanted. We used Matthew 19:5-6 and Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12. So one was from each testament, but that wasn't intentional. I would talk to your officiant if your considered about the specific requirements.

We're not having a church wedding, so we have more flexibility on which readings and how long. We haven't decided on our readings yet, but at least 1 will come from the bible (we will have either 1 or 2 guest readers). Anyway, I'm following this for some ideas!

All of Song of Songs would definitely be too long!!

Check with your specific church, b/c they will all have different rules. They should also be able to give you a list of suggestions. Generally, for a Presbyterian wedding they will probably want you to pick FOUR: 1 from the Old Testament, 1 from Psalms, 1 from Epistles, and 1 from Gospels.

We are meeting with our officiant Thursday so I'm sure she'll go over it then.

I have no idea how many. I will meet with pastor and decide on how many from there. I know I want 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and Matthew 19:5-6

All of song of songs is not only too long, but it's pretty racy for a church wedding. Paul's letter to the Corinthians is a real fave. Ask your officiant about how many and where from.

Does anyone know if it's okay to pick only certain sections for a reading. i.e. Could I mix Song of Songs 4 1-4 and 6 1-6?
