Catering: How much are you paying per person?

For some background information: FH and I are thinking of having a destination wedding and would only invite our closest friends and family, about 20 people. One of the venues I contacted requires the use of their own catering. I was quoted dinner at $80pp with a $1700 minimum for 20 guests, which does not include alcohol. Is this ridiculously high? I'm thinking it is pretty expensive, but since our guests would have to fly out for the destination wedding, it would be nice to treat them to an extremely nice dinner.

So, how much are you paying per person?

Our reception will be $80 pp, but that includes all of the food/alcohol, taxes, and gratuity.

    Edited: 110 person minimum!

Ours is $35/person, 75 minimum, but that doesn't include tax and gratuity (18-20% for gratuity). That's for the buffet only (2 entrees, starch, veggie, salad and rolls). But, we locked in the 2013 rates when we signed the contracts, so the food price hasn't gone up for us. Appetizers are another charge, but we're getting those per 50pc sets, and there's not a minimum on those. Bar packages are separate. However, they include a lot of other items for free, such tablecloths, linen napkins (both in an assortment of colors), table/centerpiece set-up, coffee and tea throughout the event, cake cutting and serving service, and probably one or two items I'm not thinking of. It's pricey, but was on the low end in the area it's in. The ceremony is allowed on the grounds for free at the venue, and the reception was $1000 for the rental/facility fee (which has gone up in price since I signed the contract). All considered, the wedding ceremony and reception are taking place at a winery, so I think it was worthwhile. That and I know for a fact that their food and service are consistently top-notch.

Ours is $120pp which includes the venue, tables, chairs, linens, 5 hour open bar, VERY elaborate cocktail hour menu, champagne toast, seated dinner, tiered wedding cake, dessert bar, bridal suite (with bridal attendant and food/drinks), groom's suite, and waitstaff for everything. I went to one of those one stop shop type venues, and it's a pretty awesome deal, considering this is NYC. Smiley smile

I'm getting married at Granby Ranch in Granby, Colorado, and it is a ski resort (one of the smaller ones). We are paying $53 pp for two entrees. it also includes on salad, two sides and a vegetable and is a buffet. But that doesn't include appetizers or drinks. And appetizers can run between $200-$350 a platter with 75 servings a platter. So i don't think $80pp is that bad.

So I added up my entire wedding budget. Venue, photog, band, food, decor, drinks. Dividing that by how many guests we have, we're paying a little less than $50 per guest. I can't believe some people pay more than that for just food alone. But then again some people can't believe I am serving fried chicken on paper plates so to each their own! Lol.

Not entirely sure because FH's parents are paying for the catering. It's between $11-13 per person though. That's for fried chicken, bbq pulled pork, roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and cole slaw. It includes rolls, butter, plates, and silverware.

$42 pp for 2 stationary apps, choice of Steak or Salmon, potatoe, salad, rolls, and cake for desert. Also includes an average of 2 rail drinks per person (many do not drink at all). This is in a restaurant who doesnt charge for the private room, and includes white table cloths, 12 inch mirrors and a candle for each table, and they will order linen napkins in our choice of color.

Ours is "a la carte", we have a chicken and beef option, plus kids, includes salad, entree, dessert and coffee service. For the chicken is $43/person, beef is $49, kids is $27. Our bar is paid by consumption but we were told to budget for 5 drinks per person, but since each drink costs differently it's hard to set an actual amount it will be, BUT $3000 tops for our bar.

Adding up what the cost is per person at the venue plus the caterer it is $110/person.

Breaking it down it is $30/person for the caterer and $77/person at the venue. Yes, it sounds extreme, but in that $77 is 5 1/2 hour reception with top shelf liquor (through dinner too), DJ, hostess, staff to clean up before and after, and bartenders.

We shopped around and found that we would have spent the same money per person on something that had less quality food.

That quote per person may include the facilities rental, linens, glasswear, dishes, etc.

Ours is in Northern CA and we are paying $19/pp for tritip buffet and it includes the linen rentals and dishes.

The actual meal is $15/person, but if you were to include cocktail hour, alcohol package, linen rentals, china rental, room fee, cake, service charge for wait staff and bartenders, and tax it'd be $75/person.
