For some background information: FH and I are thinking of having a destination wedding and would only invite our closest friends and family, about 20 people. One of the venues I contacted requires the use of their own catering. I was quoted dinner at $80pp with a $1700 minimum for 20 guests, which does not include alcohol. Is this ridiculously high? I'm thinking it is pretty expensive, but since our guests would have to fly out for the destination wedding, it would be nice to treat them to an extremely nice dinner.

So, how much are you paying per person?

Oh boy I wish I was paying $20-50pp. I am paying $149.00 plus 20%tax which makes it 195pp. But it is a saturday night wedding on Long Island. I am the only wedding, and we get all tables, chairs, unbelievable cocktail hour, 4hr reception, linens, open bar premium liquor, cake, ice cream and dinner.

For food and alcohol cost only (not counting dinnerware rental/labor fees/etc.) it was about $45 a person.

    that was food AND alcohol.

I was quoted anywhere from $75-$150 including taxes and gratuity in the Chicago suburbs We managed to negotiate our chosen venue to $83/person inclusive with open bar, hors d'oeuvres and late night snack, so we are pretty happy with it considering the sticker shock when we first started looking

I am paying $60 a head, but that includes venue, tables, chairs, and linens with no rental fee. Nice and expensive are not always the same.

That's not bad in my eyes at all. We're paying $75 per person (canadian). No open bar or anything either.

Paying about $140/pp all inclusive, which for nicer venues in Southern Ontario that held 200+ people was the normal price range.

I think $80pp is a really great price, especially for a resort-type venue in Colorado. If the food is good, I would go for it. It is far better to have your ceremony and reception in the same place so guests don't have to change venues. With such a small guest list, and people traveling, I would want to splurge for a really good dinner in a nice atmosphere. It is definitely not "ridiculously high". Many of us have paid far more pp. Plus with only 20 people, the overall bill of $1700 is quite low relative to most weddings now.

We are having a after ceremony dinner in Maui at Tommy Bahamas, $65pp (event menu) we should have about 14 people, The reception in Sacramento is about $45pp, includes all set up/take down and tables chairs and china place settings, lighting, bar (no liquor included, that's what Costco is for and the wineries).

Ours in CO, not in a ski town, is approx $60 pp. Food only, not including alcohol. $80 each really isn't bad, considering location.

Ours was $45 for only food (no drink, no cake etc). It was good quality but not super fancy.

We're paying about $160pp for a cocktail hour and 2 course seated meal (dessert will be the cake) with 5 hours of open bar plus extras like a station during the cocktail hour, late night snacks, wine service during dinner etc. It also includes chiavari chair rentals, tax and gratuity and accomodations the night of the wedding (our venue is a hotel). ETA: Wedding's in Charleston, SC

Somewhere in the neighborhood of $90 per person. It varies with the exchange rate (the Canadian Dollar is doing incredibly shitty right now) against the Pound Sterling. That $90 includes a drinks and canape reception when everyone arrives at the hotel for the weekend, a plated dinner at the wedding and a drinks package which includes a half-carafe of wine and a whisky toast for each person. We're also having an open bar - but I didn't figure that into the cost per person...that would be WAY too scary with our crowd - lol

Looking at some of the other comments, I should mention that it also includes all the amenities like table linens, wait staff, bar staff etc.

$95/pp includes - two choice three course meal, wine, and two passed apps, plus we are doing an open bar $40/pp, so total $135/pp.

For food only, we're at 29 pp. That's a Mexican buffet and 3 hors d'ourvres stations. We're also having them do tea and lemonade which adds another 3pp. Alcohol is all on us still.

Where I live, NYC, that's not bad at all. However, with alcohol added $80 will probably be closer to $100 per person. My venue, which is a social club, is $140 per person for a cocktail hour followed by 3 course plated dinner and top shelf open bar for 5 hrs. Just beer and wine bar brings is down to $125.

$50.04 per person with a 200 person minimum. Includes: Family Style Dinner (2 basic appetizers, plated salad, entrees and sides, various Italian desserts), the cake from a local bakery (we go in as if we are paying but they get the bill in the end), room rental for 5.5 hours, tables, chairs, tablecloths, cloth napkins, all dinnerware and glassware, some uplighting, two bartenders, bar washes/mixers and sodas, coffee and tea, tax and gratuity. If we don't reach the 200 guest minimum then he will charge us for 200, make food for however many people are there, and then make the difference in brunch food if we are having a sendoff for relatives the next morning. So if we have 175 people at the reception, we will get 25 people worth of brunch food made the next morning to pick up. He didn't have to do that because this is a very popular venue that books up very quickly, and we don't expect to need it, but I thought that was nice.

That is in Northeast Ohio at a party center that is in the top 5 of the nicest ones in our county. I feel like we're getting a steal compared to some of the other prices we got and what I see on here. It actually has very good ratings, too. So I know we aren't getting screwed.
