Catering: How much are you paying per person?

Caitlin, on April 15, 2015 at 1:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 93

For some background information: FH and I are thinking of having a destination wedding and would only invite our closest friends and family, about 20 people. One of the venues I contacted requires the use of their own catering. I was quoted dinner at $80pp with a $1700 minimum for 20 guests, which does not include alcohol. Is this ridiculously high? I'm thinking it is pretty expensive, but since our guests would have to fly out for the destination wedding, it would be nice to treat them to an extremely nice dinner.

So, how much are you paying per person?

Oh man! I work part time for a BBQ restaurant so they're giving us an amazing deal- $4/person.

Whether that is too high or not depends on where you're looking.

What's the location for your potential destination wedding?

$80 person is on the high end for no alcohol, but not unheard of. Our venue runs about $55 - 75 per person without alcohol, but another one I looked at was $135 without alcohol. $80 is not a horrible price, but not great either. Keep looking!!

I get half off since it is a daytime wedding, but if I didn't, I would have been close to your range (side eye)...it all depends on what the venue or location is worth to you both...

$80pp isn't too bad as long as the food is good! If the food is mediocre I would assume the price is so high because of the wedding destination.

Compare to other places for pricing. Which do you end up liking the most? Can you justify the price?

That doesn't seem outrageous considering its a resort and in the middle of their peak season. $80 is about the average where I am.

FWIW, part of the reason we are having a destination wedding is that near home, it was going to cost us about $135 per person for food and drink - not including the venue rental OR table and chair rental.

If we do go through with the destination wedding, we would definitely use the venue for our ceremony. We are just debating if we want to have our small reception at this venue as well. Another thought is having our small reception at a private room in a restaurant in town. However, I would like to keep the ceremony and reception at the same place if possible.

Cocktail party reception - appetizers only are going to be about 100 per person and alcohol about 80 so $180 plus or minus $10-$20. This doesn't include the service fee or whatever fees are being tacked on to the day. BUT I don't have to do anything... no chairs or table cloths or any of that DIY stuff.

    Cocktail hour hors d'oeuvres

    Champagne Toast

Right now we're at $16/pp, but that's bbq and we might be changing to farm to table through the venue which will be around $50/pp. I think it depends on the formality of your wedding/venue, time of day, what you're serving, what's included (full service? drop off? etc), location, etc. Caterering prices vary dramatically, so I don't think you can easily compare prices across the board.
