Can't find the right Bible Verse!!! Help?

Eyebdreamin', on July 8, 2010 at 12:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I need to find just one Bible verse for my wedding ceremony, but I don't want one of those "man is in charge, women must follow" kind of verses. I was thinking maybe one that focuses more on friendship or the bond of union or faith in marriage. Any ideas?

Heh...aside from "love is patient, love is kind" from 1 Corinthians, good luck finding something in the Bible that doesn't offend the feminist in you! I'll be checking back on this thread to see if anyone has suggestions.

    Matthew 19:4-6

Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

    Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12

9 Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their work:

    10 If one falls down,

his friend can help him up.

But pity the man who falls

and has no one to help him up!

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,

    two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Gen 2:22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

I read a commentary on this that said soemthing about woman being taking from his side. not from his head that she rule over him & not from his feet that he trample over her, but from his side that they are a team. i know thats not exactly how it goes, but if your interested i can look it up at home and get it for you.

Look in Song of Songs. The whole book is a love poem. It's extremely intimate. Hopefully that's of some help. It's not exactly about friendship or being faithful, but I feel like it has a more equal feel to it. =)

Shell, if you find where you read that about the rib instead of the head or the foot, I would love to incorporate that message!

Song of Soloman IS great to look. It's truly the greatest love letter ever written. Smiley smile

I'm using a verse from there to open my ceremony. It's a little different, but it's my favorite passage in the entire bible.

Rise up, my love, my fair one,

    And come away.

For lo, the winter is past,

The rain is over and gone.

    The flowers appear on the earth;

The time of singing has come,

And the voice of the turtledove

    Is heard in our land.

The fig tree puts forth her green figs,

And the vines with the tender grapes

    Give a good smell.

Rise up, my love, my fair one,

    And come away!

Ok I'm home now and I just looked it up. It comes out of the Believers Bible Commentary by William MacDonald Page 35 commenting on Genesis "His (Adams) bride was formed from one of his ribs while he slept...Woman was taken not from Adam's head to dominate him, nor from his feet to be trodden down, but from under his arm to be protected, and from near his heart to be loved "

I knew it ended way better then I put it. I just love Williams comment on this verse. There's more too, but this is the main part about man & woman. Enjoy!

    1 John 3: 18-24

It is long, but sweet. I'd post it but it would be too long!
