Can you negotiate extras AFTER you've signed the contract?

Jill, on January 25, 2012 at 10:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

After reading some posts about negotiating, in retrospect, I think we were quoted (and even signed the contract) for a really high rental premium on my reception venue.

They said they "included" extras (ie projector package, extra VIP mobile bathroom (semi-outdoor wedding), but really, wow - my FILs paid a lot for the venue (and ONLY the venue). None of this included extra table rentals for cocktail hour, lounge furniture, etc.

Is it too late to ask for some extras since we already signed the contract?

I would ask. I'm sure they want to keep you happy so you dont cancel the contract, which I assume you could if you were very unhappy with things. Anyway it wont hurt to ask.

I mean, you can. The worst they can say is no.

I think it's reasonable to say, "We would really like to add the following things but we're at our max budget, can you work with us?"

It's typicaly too late. I'd call them and say you were going over the contract and noticed some major things that were missing, and wanted to make sure they were included- because you aren't happy if they are not. If the venue is all-inclusive and you are having the ceremony there- the cocktail tables should be included. Lounge furniture is definitely an extra because most places don't have that stuff.

You can talk to them and see what they will add. But expect to have to renegotiate and maybe pay a bit extra for a few of those things. Just make sure that you get a hell of a deal on them adding them after.

Oh- it's typical that they will give you stuff for free that they already own- upgraded linens, etc. It's the same amount of work for them...

You could ask and hope that someone nice might throw you a bone, but typically no. Unless they break something on their end, or there's a clause stating you can get out of it, there's not much you can do.

Of course you can! It's called an addendum to your contract. :-) No need to threaten about cancelling or saying You're Not Happy (at least not to begin with) By starting the convo off positive, like I'm so happy I booked here and was hoping you could add X at no charge, you're more likely to get what you want. If the facility has it in inventory there's typically not a charge, they will have to charge you though if they have to outsource it. :-)

    Happy negotiating!

You can ask. It depends on what you're already getting, what extras you're asking for, whether you're willing to pay extra for those extras, etc. But they're not likely to throw in stuff for free just because you feel you're being charged too much for what you already agreed to.
